Pyrenees Steep Skiing TR (from the old Epicski forum)

Rod9301 is still active on SkiTalk although I did not see any recent trips reports. He had a hip replacement, was mountain biking 7 weeks later and he and others recommend not waiting to replace hip or knee if needed. He also posted "If you don't fall, skiing really steep stuff is pretty easy on...

    With $100k annual travel budget...

Thanks for all the input and sorry to get thread off-topic. Since I'd like to add at least a couple of new-to-me ski on way to/from Mustang next Feb. I'll try to make use of it. Some others I'm considering are Williamette Pass (not far out of way when going to Bend), Snoqualmie Pass areas (I...

    American Election 2024

Since nobody else has posted Trump South Park video, I will share it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Afetnw70S04 I found it via https://www.huffpost.com/entry/south-park-naked-trump_n_6881da32e4b0d55a3f195c1b where most of the other links about Trump are not funny. Neither is CBS paying $16M...

    With $100k annual travel budget...

I skied 2 days at both Fernie and Castle after Mustang in both 2018 and 2020 and never saw Polar Peak run, one year was due to an avalanche. I also received health insurance for the nearly 10 years from when I retired until I turned 65. You had to have 15 years of service and retire directly...

    49 Degrees North, WA: March 13, 2021

Of the ski area near Spokane, beside Schweitzer, I've only skied 49 North (with some Arctic freeze on return from my last Mustang trip in 2023). Do you think Silver Mountain and Mt Spokane compare or are worth paying for when Schweitzer is free for me?

    Wildlife In Populated Regions

Coyote a year ago in tree along creek above nearby park. I was walking with my leashed dog. At my family's property in hills 11 miles from where I live, I had dogs off leash and a coyote got in between our Beagle, who probably looked like lunch, and our White German Shepherd, much younger than...

    Wildlife In Populated Regions

"Weighing up to 200 pounds, California’s wild pigs live in 56 out of 58 counties. These hybrid creatures — part domesticated pig, part wild boar — have been wreaking havoc throughout the state for the past century, tearing up sensitive habitats and increasingly, posing a safety hazard to...

    Ski-Air Travel

Will be interesting to see how our late September SFO-Santiago de Compostela (SCQ- Northwest Spain) and early October return work out. My wife was going to do a high-end Baiona-Santiago 121 Km walk, part of the Portuguese Camino de Santiago with her sister and brother-in-law. (Single supplement...

    American Election 2024

South Lake Tahoe Y this morning. We were on our way to Angora Lakes which is a less than one mile hike to beautiful alpine lakes. Upper one has 500’ long beach, cabin, rowboat and SUP rentals, store famous for their lemonade, cliff jumping and waterfalls from snow melting below Echo Peak. There...

Visalia – Sequoia National Park, June 2-3, 2025

My only time in Sequoia was March 18, 2013. My wife was doing system rollout for California Water Service in Visalia. I went with her and took Amtrak back to San Jose after a couple of days. It was a low enough snow year that I hiked to top of Moro Rock. Note and photos from my Facebook post...

Epic Pass - Vail now Controls(?) Most of Austria

Apple maps finally knows Tioga Pass is open (it didn’t earlier in week) and says it’s 20 miles shorter but 13 min longer than Sonora Pass for me to get home from Mammoth. Not sure I believe the longer time unless stuck behind slow vehicles in and after Yosemite.

Epic Pass - Vail now Controls(?) Most of Austria

Employees with unused benefits are not hard to find in So. Tahoe. A couple who live three houses away from my family cabin always have unused benefits that are good for 1/2 off walkup or free gondola ride in Winter or Summer that they are willing to share even though I don't know them very well...

Mammoth Mountain, CA May 26-28, 2025

Only at the very top as seen to the right in my photo at entrance station. There was at least a couple feet of snow on ground between there and 13K' Mt Dana, but the W-facing slopes had mostly burnt off. There was little snow in open areas on right/N of highway in 8600' Tuolumne Meadows although...

    2024-25 Season Recap

I'm starting it again as I think my season is over even though Mammoth could be open another 2-3 weeks. Edit to add now closing June 15. Days: 46 vs. 47 last year and 46 the year before that. Not getting to my goal of 50, even with roadtrip to UT and CO where I skied 16 of 18 days including one...

Tioga Pass re-opened on Memorial after Winter closure which cuts my route home to 235 miles, compared to ~330 if I go all the way to Minden to fill-up on cheaper NV gas, then go past Kirkwood as I did earlier this May. Apple Maps still does not appear to know it is opened. I stopped at Whoa...

Mammoth Mountain, CA May 26-28, 2025

Tuesday May 27 was a much nicer day than cloudy Memorial Day, even though chair 2 remained closed, gondola started closure for annual maintenance and since long weekend was over, Mammoth only ran chairs 1, 3, 11 and 23. But number of people skiing had dropped by 80-90%. We parked at the Mill and...

I think I was a chair ahead of Big Tim on 23 when rushing to get two more laps before 1 PM closure after a longish wait for parking shuttle to get me back to chair 1 after skiing Stump with @Tony Crocker. I had enough time to re-apply wax to my skis and to go to car to get re-apply sunscreen. I...

Mammoth Mountain, CA May 26-28, 2025

I left So. Tahoe before 430 AM, filled up on not so cheap anymore NV gas ($3.83 - Costco in CA is $4.39) in Minden and caught almost sunrise over Topaz Lake. View of the (Mono) Inn Fire that closed 395 from Thursday evening to Saturday at 8 PM and would have made for a 2 hr detour into NV. At...

Palisades Tahoe, CA May 25, 2025

(Corrected the date) I had a very long Sunday. I thought I'd set alarm for a little before 3 AM, but didn't and luckily had to pee not much after 3 which got me up and out of the house by 4:15. I loaded Funitel about 815 and skied a couple of Gold Coast, then Siberia laps, finding Tricia from...
