On our local cable news they went to the movie theater yesterday in Syracuse burbs and interviewed the people who were there...all were clearly Jewish (based on their seemingly Jewish names) and one of the people said that they were going out for Chinese food afterward. Nothing was mentioned...

Hope Lake Mountain Resort, NY 12/25/09

I know of a few people who have gone as guests of friends/relatives who rented a room at $350 per night (for just one night, because who, with children, from around here, could afford more than that? Not too many, as our average household income is about $45k.) They said it was fun, and as you...

Hope Lake Mountain Resort, NY 12/25/09

Greek Peak skied really well and was pretty empty. It was quite a pleasure, and having the company of James Deluxe made it even more fun. After skiing I went and checked out Hope Lake Lodge. Hope Lake Lodge actually pretty nice and the waterpark was pretty active, with a good number of people...

    Tax on Skiing in NY

Spirited debate is always ok and encouraged...here and throughout our great country. When it crosses into personal attacks it's really not and personal respect and decency are often the the first casualties. I'm disappointed with you, Admin

    Tax on Skiing in NY

Sugar tax is a luxury tax...not a tax on behavior. There are plenty of alternatives to sugary soft drinks...i.e. juices and water.

    Tax on Skiing in NY

While I qualified it with that in mind...I think that taxing sugary drinks is a good way to raise funds. Sugary drinks don't serve any needs, like say gasoline does.

    Tax on Skiing in NY

Hurray! but I think they should tax all sweetened soft drinks with both sugar and aspartame...they provide no health benefits and probably should not be consumed as much as they are. We already pay a lot of taxes on alcoholic beverages in NY. If it's only 10 cents per can/bottle, it will...

Current Greek Peak conditions from Acid Christ

For the 4th time in the last 5 weeks I got a message from Acid Christ (texted from the lift at GP) that the conditions are the worst ever. Today I got that same message, only worse. He says...if you can ski this, you can ski anything. It's that bad. It has rained substantially this week. The...

    ADKs: March 27-29

Too soon to plan the dates. Will only go to WF and/or Gore if it is soft spring conditions or powder (although the latter is unlikely). Also, I usually go ski with the Skivttlers at Stowe during this time, and that weekend has already been mentioned. If I don't get to use up my pricechopper...

    Snowbird/White Pine backcountry, Utah - 3/8/09

Why not :stir: it keeps the conversation going and brings up interesting points...plus, it is entertaining I only brought up the pit thing because I was wondering when/where that is done and if people who go into the backcountry practice those techniques regularly, or if it is overlooked...

That was taken out of context... not to :dead horse: but, while I realized it would not make me safer from an avalanche, it would improve my chances of survival (even if only by a small percent), thereby improving my safety from potential death (even if only marginally) semantics

    Snowbird/White Pine backcountry, Utah - 3/8/09

Why do you say that? I've only skied once on avalanche terrain without the appropriate gear or guidance (Snowy Slides, NY), and I know that it was risky and I relied on my friends for safety. It definitely raised my awareness, though I have yet to do anything about getting trained. When I...

    Snowbird/White Pine backcountry, Utah - 3/8/09

Just wondering...Who did the analysis of the slope's stability? Did anyone dig snowpits on that slope? Did anyone in your group have the skills to assess slope stability? and how important do you think that is?
