Where to go in Colorado ?? :)

1st week of December is damn early for just about anywhere. Pretty good snowmaking at Keystone and Copper though, but crowds. And hey, three seasons ago it was off the hook in December, so maybe we're over due...

5 dead in backcountry avi on Loveland Pass

EMSC, the bowl from the to of the pass would have been a better spot to get caught by an avalanche. The consequence is not as severe as Sheep creek. Open terrain, no trees, long run outs. Sheep Creek had the huge slop above it that ripped, a creek drainage that acted as a funnel, and trees to...

    Seattle

Snoqualmie/Alpental is going to be closest. Baker is Baker, one of the most bad ass areas in the US. It's also probably the furthest from Seattle. Place is amazing though. Crystal is another solid choice, also has the most amenities. There is actually lodging there. Stevens is quality. It...

    Cameron Pass 10-27-28

Well if the Forest Service was down to allow it, I think the vertical may have given some pause. From the top of the South Diamond where we at to the parking lot is decent vertical, but not overwhelming. Areas like Montgomery Pass are pretty short. Not to mention it would just be a hell of an...

    Cameron Pass 10-27-28

It does. Highway 14 is the main route for people from Fort Collins to drive to Steamboat and vice a versa. It's a slow long drive up 14 from Fort Collins. Takes an hour to get to the top of the pass from the mouth of the canyon. Lots of rock fall along the road side too. The drive goes...

    Cameron Pass 10-27-28

Since Powder Mountain has been trumping all lately I had to try for some powder turns somewhere. We chose Cameron Pass. It turned out to be a good choice. About 30" on the ground. The Pass got 18" at the start of this storm and it snowed fairly hard all weekend. Good conditions were had...

    Black Dog

I hadn't heard. :-( The video felt like a tribute, but nothing said at the end and had the girl still kicking. Dogs burn brightly but in turn they have short lives. RIP.

    (OT) RNMP Elk watching 9/29/12

That is always a good time checking out the Elk this time of year. RMNP is a pretty amazing place. The backcountry in the winter is quite excellent too.

Echo Mtn, CO becomes Ski Racing 'Country Club'

That place sucked any way. If she wants to make it a private ski club, then whatever. I doubt they will have a taste for keeping it operational for more than two-three seasons. Then it'll just become another lost ski area.

Video: Alta Ski Patrol on avalanche control

Nice find admin. Amazing an absolutely frightening as to the size of the slide in Glory.

    Berthoud Pass avalanche

He was skiing in an area with pretty high consequence. The alpine is just not a great place to be skiing these days. Especially on steeper slopes like the Second Creek headwall. He's very lucky to be alive. The CAIC has a preliminary report up on their site. When it snows for real, things...

    Incident at Snowbasin

I think if I had of acted like that patroller I would have been fired. Maybe the kid was a little close to that one instructor just camping at the side hit. Was he riding fast? Just by the nature of what he did, no way. The little kid on skis was definitely 20+ feet away from where he...

    RIP Jamie Pierre

Level 1 in 2001, did my Level 2 last year with Silverton Avalanche school. I've been riding almost exclusively in the backcountry since back in 01. I also work with an organization that provides free avalanche training. Friends of Berthoud Pass. Trying to make a difference. It's...

Thanks admin! I had messed with it enough, that I just dropped it. Format is noted for future reference.

And the first ski area to open for 11-12 will be.......

I did not make the trek down to Wolf Creek. Thought about it, but as most of you know I don't really care to ride lifts all that much anymore. I also was lazy about hiking for any turns too. A bunch of the Neversummer crew did head down there though and they put up a pretty sweet video...

And the first ski area to open for 11-12 will be.......

I think Hood had some powder days a couple of weeks ago actually. I saw a snow alert for the PNW. Regardless, Wolf Creek is a good start. I just think it's funny that there is this race to be the first open when Hood has won that battle year after year. Most of the time the riding isn't...

That is pretty sweet for sure. Just for the record though, Mt Hood has been open for weeks. They never really close...

I guess I am glad that I made the call to ride Vail Pass on Monday. Enough wind to keep the snow cool, but not trying to knock you over either. If you're in town over the weekend and have your bc gear, I'd be happy to do a tour with the legendary Tony Crocker
