    Western North America Conditions 2025/26

One of my Snowbird buddies has been skiing Alta quite a bit in the last week or two. He says there is considerably more terrain acreage open than Snowbird or Solitude. This is not unexpected, as Alta typically does well in early season compared to the others, catching every little bit of snow...

    Misc. Articles of Interest

Do we have a catchall thread for various articles of interest like this, generally mountain-related? Mods are free to move this as appropriate. Here is a pretty fascinating NY Times article on the loss of a US nuclear spying device in the Himalaya Mtns of India in 1965. The device is still out...

    Monitoring Cardiac Health

I've had high cholesterol between 240-290 since about age 40. I was active and my good cholesterol numbers were good. Overall ratio was considered fine and no meds until about about 7 years ago. Since then been taking atorvastatin, which knocked number back to 200-220. Now at 40mg daily...

Where are you going this season (25/26)?

Very sorry to hear @EMSC . Get well soon.! I'm a believer in prayer and will keep you in my thoughts. What are the exact dates of your ski Mustang Powder weeks in January or Feb? I'm not interested, but could ask around in my circle of friends.

    Western North America Conditions 2025/26

They opened a WROD from the summit of Snowbird this week. I got a few rides on the tram today. Manmade and natural snow surface pretty good, but won't hold up well in heavier weekend traffic unless we get more snow.

    Western North America Conditions 2025/26

LCC and BCC got about 9-12" new snow over the weekend, but it was not the game changer big dump everyone hoped for. Still skiing on WROD yesterday at Solitude.

    Best US Ski Towns

There are some ski towns that actually draw bigger crowds in summer, than winter, such as Jackson, WY, South Lake Tahoe, CA/NV, Taos, NM, North Conway, NH, Lake Placid, NY, Banner Elk, NC, Banff, AB, etc. Those can be great places to visit in winter because there is an abundance of lodging at...

    Best US Ski Towns

USA Today put out a list recently of the 10 best US ski towns. See here From #10 to #1: McCall, Bend, Stowe, Aspen, Lake Placid, Breckenridge, Truckee, Jackson, Mammoth Lakes, North Conway. A couple surprises for me and places I've never been are McCall and Truckee. I've driven by Truckee...

    American Election 2024

I like James Comey, although he might have handled things a little differently in the 2016 election. Good statement by him here:

    Open Snow Subscription Change 2025

A friend gave me a free subscription once, but I didn't really use it much. I ski when I ski, regardless of conditions. Three to four times per week when in local mode. I use the national weather service local forecasts for how to dress in the immediate next few days. The one or two...

    Storm Skiing Journal

I am aware of LIftblog and Storm Skiing Journal. I admire their efforts, but don't visit the sites often or consume much of their output. I'm not that into the business or technical sides of skiing. I've used Liftblog as a resource for details on vertical rise, length, etc. when discussing my...

    American Election 2024

Never say never, it could escalate into a major scandal. However, We've seen other presidents with questionable behavior towards the opposite sex and it's unsavory, but doesn't seem to be an impeachable offense. So far DJT has been the teflon man for so many things. I'm now in Utah for the...

Skiing Alongside A City (e.g. Innsbruck)

My one and only ski trip to the Alps (been there several times for non-ski trips) was in 2003. I stayed in Salzburg all week and rode a shuttle bus to to five different resorts during the week, Flachau, Zauchensee, Bad Gastein, Saalbach, Zell am See. I enjoyed many non-ski activities that...

    American Election 2024

After hundreds of thousands of federal workers were furloughed (or working without pay) since the government shut down on Oct. 1, now with the shutdown ending they will receive back pay for the time missed. In other words, a bunch of Govt workers are going to be paid for sitting on their duffs...

    DFU Zone

The crazy thing about those Kings and Queens competitions they do at JH is that those people fly by the dangerous part and land in the "runout". Maybe they are on to something.:eusa-dance:

    DFU Zone

My son did the side stepping in that photo of Corbet's for a short distance and then had to jump approx 6 feet to the snow surface below. He's done that run 3 or 4 times. I witnessed him a couple times and said a 🙏 just before he dropped-in the first time.

    DFU Zone

I don't ski no fall zones. I suppose I get near terrain like that at times, but I don't ski it. Utah has a few places that might qualify, especially in low tide conditions. But generally, most lines in and near resort-patrolled ski terrain can be navigated without risking life if tackled...

    Europe 2025/26

Nice. My wife and I used a 21 day eurail pass to visit Ger, IT, FR, Switz in May-June 1983! Also rode buses and boats with that pass. Visited Jungfrau, Zermatt, Garmisch, Paris, Rome, etc. Terrifically memorable trip totaling 25 days in Europe, carless.
