    Monitoring Cardiac Health

Incidentally we in Oz measure blood cholesterol in millimoles per litre while in the US you measure it in milligrams per decilitre I believe. Multiply the Australian measure by 18 to get the US measure apparently. Without statins my cholesterol level is near in 200 in your measure.

    Monitoring Cardiac Health

I’ve had two. One at age 50 to get a baseline. It showed “about as much build up as the average 65 year old” and one at 52 that showed little change. My maternal grandfather dropped dead of a coronary while refereeing a rugby league game at age 36. It appears the statins have been doing their job.

    Monitoring Cardiac Health

@EMSC sorry to hear but I’m glad your episode wasn’t the big one. This hits close to home as I’m waiting for the inevitable due to severe hypercholesterolemia. I’ve been on statins for 39 years but they’ll only do so much. All the best with the recovery.

    Ski-Air Travel

Not ski travel but it's to mountains so relatively related....... I'm actively looking to book flights to Munich for next September so we can do some walking around Slovenia and the Dolomites. I'm seriously considering a stopover in Hong Kong or Singapore on the way there or the way home. Anyone...

    Mammoth, December 1-2, 2025

Impressive that there's a bit of advanced terrain open given the relatively lean start. It's a great looking ski hill isn't it.

I’m pretty sure I hit the jackpot for ‘dollar per air mile’ value when I got my Brisbane to Milan (return) flights for March 2026 at less than 1500aud (about 1000USD).

Where are you going this season (25/26)?

Barring injury, sickness, wars or pandemics we’re heading to Japan at the end of January. Targets are Madarao, Myoko, Ryuoo and all the different sectors of Shiga Kogen. Then we’re in and out of Milan in late March/early April. No hard plan on which direction to drive but I will have...

    Europe 2025/26

My daughter has just finished her university course and is floating about just doing her part time hospitality work until next year. I’ve just offered to send her to Val D’Isere for an all inclusive week with UCPA starting 29/11...

    Western North America Conditions 2025/26

Crikey. That’s grim. Even though I have no intention of going anywhere near North America for skiing this winter I’ll make a point of keeping an eye on progress. I’m backing Grand Targhee will be 100% open when the fat man comes.

And due to higher elevation no rain unlike the other areas. Even when staying in the valley that will be the option if we get a very common mid winter warm up. Drier snow up there too.

I’m the same. Long haul is no great chore. I usually get between 7 and 9 hours sleep.

    Japan 2026

Very sadly the opportunities for the kids to ski with us are now really limited due to their relatively new found work schedules. We have many great memories in the bank but I hope we can still get the stars to align in the future.

    Japan 2026

I’ve ripped this off the Aussie ski forum - “Storms" (low pressure troughs and cold fronts) are not really what determines normal heavy snowfalls, particularly in central Japan and northern Honshu. The key is high pressure over eastern Siberia (around Lake Baikal / Mongolia), with a ridge of...

    Japan 2026

We won’t go to Habuka in an endeavour to avoid the swathes of my fellow countrymen. We’ll stay in the valley somewhere around Nakano/Yudanaka. From there Nozawa Onsen, Madarao, Myoko are within striking distance. We’ll then stay on snow at Japan’s biggest and highest linked ski resort Shiga...
