Can Snowmaking Compensate for Climate Change?

Seven Springs historically always had amazing snowmaking. I think it had been more of a snowmaking company with a ski area. The longtime owner was Herman K Dupre (HKD). He was known for his interest and innovation in snowmaking. This was where HKD used to develop and test their snowguns...

Can Snowmaking Compensate for Climate Change?

I went to medical school in Cincinnati and therefore for 4 years Perfect North was my home mtn as it was less than 30 minutes away. Somehow they always had snow from mid December to first week of March. In mid winter when they had snowmaking windows they made a lot of snow and the base was...

My understanding is the majority of the alps see your round precipitation with significant summer rainfall. Is there nearby natural lakes, etc that they pump from?

Can Snowmaking Compensate for Climate Change?

After having skied in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, NY, WV, VT, Ontario and Quebec on the east of the continent, I can attest that the dry snow from snowmaking guns really only appears in the areas that can place an adequate base in the early season and are focusing on surface conditions or when...

Can Snowmaking Compensate for Climate Change?

Nothing can overcome the physics. Maximum snowmaking is 28 wetbulb. Most of the advances in snowguns has been the lower energy guns. Snowguns fall into 3 categories. Air-water (old, low efficiency, uses massive amounts of compressed air), fan guns (does use nearly as much compressed air...

Can Snowmaking Compensate for Climate Change?

Yes as a east side of the continent skier, and someone who tinkered with backyard snowmaking, I can attest to snowguns being able to make dry snow if the ski area is willing to do this and the temps are cold enough. If temps are very cold (under 0 F) or so, it all seems to be dry without the...

For me, I have been finding that plane tickets that provide some flexibility are only slightly more expensive, car rentals can always be cancelled as well. Therefore, I have been booking earlier knowing that I can change if needed.

    PeakRankings: Trips

I was in Colorado this summer for 2 weeks. Stayed in a mix of elevations ranging from 5500-9200 feet. It took exactly 14 days to get fully acclimated to Denver elevation. I have found that the most telling sport for acclimatization is lap swimming as you can’t really increase one’s...

What Is An Industrial Ski Resort -- And Is It Necessarily Bad?

My local mountain Blue Mtn in Ontario would likely be an industrial mountain. After skiing there, anywhere in Colorado seems much better.

    Banff/Lake Louise late February?

I woke up at Lake Louise one January in 2019 or 2020 to -46c. Went to LL to ski and they never opened that day. High temp never climbed above -33c. We ended up going for a hike near the lake and discovered sound propagation is much further in extreme cold.

    Banff/Lake Louise late February?

I have skied Lake Louise nearly every January for the last 8 years. My experience has been, surface preservation mid winter is unparalleled. Winter is cold in Banff, sun angles are low. Even in very low tide last winter, surface conditions were generally good. The issue is rocks. I...

Great Lakes: Freezes, Lake Effect, and Cooling

The other great lakes can also do the same but for a shorter window in the spring. When we get unseasonably warm temps (80’s F) in late April, temps can be 30 F cooler near lake Ontario. Once the lake warms up, this effect diminishes dramatically.

    Xeriscape In Desert Climates

The landlocked places such as Phoenix and Las Vegas are the most likely to be impacted when the Colorado river runs out of water. Coastal locations can pivot to very expensive, but feasible, desalination.
