This was Monterosa upon arrive 1/18/26. The storm dropped 40-80 cm IIRC depending on aspect/micro climate. I believe it was part of a retour d’est that blanketed much of Aosta in mid January. AI missed this one. I wonder why because it should be able to pull directly from weather stations.
Based on the data and considerable wisdom in this thread my Europe algorithm is as follows:
WHENEVER base depth and surface conditions in Aosta are good - get on a plane!
When planning for Presidents week, stick to Switzerland; if Epic - Andermatt; if ikon - Zermatt
Save Chamonix and Verbier for...
Thank you Tony! Just what I was looking for.
I misunderstood your line. By “this project” I thought you were referencing my personal interest in crowd stats, not the particular site which we agree is lame.
This project involves asking you and other experts on this site to summarize their acquired wisdom. Parents of school aged kids - i have a quarter dozen - know crowding can be a real problem when faced with a fixed holiday schedule. Snow base and surface conditions are paramount, but an...
This is great, but where do the Dutch/germans/italians/french/british etc typically holiday? I’d bet less than 5% of these weeks are a spontaneous powder chase; rather, they are likely prebooked family or friend group vacations. Surely this data is out there and can be gleaned to create a euro...
I previously posted this and now realize it is in the wrong thread [now in the right thread, TC]. Apologies in advance as I am not sure how to move.
This is an interesting site.

ChrisC, can you (and other powder hound data scientists on this site) interrogate this...
AI (slop?) from my powder chasing digital assitant. Based on the info below, it seems that one should book Malpensa, not Zurich because it offers the best optionality. Is this true in practice?
The Alps are governed by a handful of recurring synoptic weather patterns rather than random storms...
Nice conditions! Is a guide necessary for these lines? Looks line 500 vert ft at 30-45 degrees with reasonable line of site and then skiers left run out back to lift. Hidden hazards?
Yes, I stayed in Staffal last January and agree it’s perhaps the best base for Monterosa. But I would like to overnight in Alagna, and do a bit of house shopping, if only to kill a dream once and for all. Regarding Andermatt, would you recommend round tripping from either Milan or Zurich? If...
Same here. I cannot secure a bed, regardless of room type, at Portillo. ChrisC has encourage day tripping from Los Andes, but also indicated that it would amount to daily LCC shit show😩. What’s a powder hound to do???!
Under your advisement, we’ll be there in February. I am presently holding flights in and out of Zurich, but I’m considering a change to Milano which would an allow a stop over in Alagna. More driving but more optionality. Does this make sense?
For reference, these monterosa chutes reminded me of the rarely opened Chamonix chutes/livin the dream chute entry on the back side of baldy. These are accessed about a 1/3 of the way up the baldy hike from the snowbird side heading back into mineral basin. Great fun at monterosa and snowbird.
Thank you for posting.
I skied these, some with first tracks. Skinned up to the base of Punta Vitoria 2x for extended balma runs. Made many runs through the Olen zone. Did not get to ski la malfatta.
I love monterosa. The place even has steep trees (larch forest beneath punta jolanta lift)...
