17" at Big Rock

17" of light 'n' dry at Pres'que Isle Maine last night and today. That should fully open Big Rock. I'm thinking of heading up there Saturday.

Sweet! I skied there last March on a trip to Fort Kent to check out the Maine Winter Sports Center. I was pleasantly surprised what a 1,100 vertical foot hill could have. Especially hiking up to skiers left of the mountain, there is some decent backcountry and woods skiing. I just started following the snow mobile trail up to the towers and had been eyeing some open areas in the forest from the base...found some pretty sweet but short stuff in there. Steeper than I would've thought as well. Too bad it had a southern exposure and in March that meant thin cover...blasted a bunch of core shots into my Bandits.

17" on no base is a BAD thing. Had some very nice turns in some awesome light and fluffy powder, but I had to fix 4 core shots when I got home.

LobsterTeleGrrl was on my powder skis and she kept poaching my lines! Fortunately she left enough space to the sides to let me spoon her turns, so there was enough untracked to go around.

Anything that they had packed and groomed was fine to ski, but the ungroomed trails were murder on the bases. One more storm should get them completely open, the woods probably need at least another two feet to be in good shape.
