3/22 Sugarbush

Never been to sugarbush until around 9am yesterday. Pulled up to a beautiful somewhat chilly bluebird day. The snow report said 5 inches of fresh in 24hrs but I was skeptical. Turned out to be some of the best snow of the year.

First run down a groomer was sweet, but it didn't take us long to get in the trees. I saw a line in some trees off the quad and just dropped in. It was amazing. We had big shit eating grins on our faces at the bottom. There was at least half a foot of freshies, with drifts in some places up over my waist! We rode Egans woods which was just okay, but I do'nt think we found the best line. Definately didn't seem worthy of a double black diamond rating. Next run down Lew's Line was sweet. It looked like it might have been tracked out by the entrance but we found so many fresh untracked lines and even a couple of small cliffs. This was one of the best runs of the day for sure.

Eventually we headed over to the castlerock area. The terrain over here was sweet, and we dropped into the woods skiiers right of the lift-line for some steep and deep turns over gnarly terrain.

Overall one of the best days of the year. We never made it over to Mt. Ellen as my buddy has a bad knee and was done before 2. I got the feeling there was some amazing off-piste skiing here if one knew where to find it, probably below the ridge between the two areas. Lucky for us there was almost nobody there and even fewer people in the trees; we pretty much found fresh powder turns all day long. If I didn't have an amazing week last week at Jay and Stowe (and had someone to show me to the gnarliest terrain) this would probably have been the best day (and snow) of the year.
