I skied Sugarbush Wednesday, February 2. The Mad River Valley is in the midst of a lean snow year and conditions are marginal as a result. Cover was dangerously thin on all Castlerock trails and I believe that portion of the mountain will close imminently unless they receive significant snow. All other natural snow trails had thin cover with significant amounts of underbrush protruding through the snow surface. Snowmaking trails had adequate cover, but they also had a tendency to become hard-packed and slick as the day wore on. All ungroomed snowmaking trails were exceptionally hard-packed and slick due to cold temperatures and skier traffic. For example, Stein?s Run is particularly treacherous right now, with widely spaced bumps interspersed on a polished, steep grade worthy of a world cup race. They were making snow on a few trails, but it was surprising to see just how quickly the man-made snow cakes and compresses into a very challenging skiing surface. :x
Conditions at Mt. Ellen are similar.
