Bluebird day at Greek Peak 1.30.05

Conditions were superb, with 100% of the terrain open. The snow was soft on and off-piste. 25 degrees and the sun was blazing. It was the most crowded day we've seen at Greek Peak, so the slow lifts make the lines long, keeping the crowds from the trails. A high speed lift would be nice.

Besides the glades seen in these pics, there is a lot of other wooded terrain that could give Greek Peak a real boost if they were cleared of fallen trees. There's a lot of potential for more black diamond terrain in the woods between the trails. Maybe some day we will be able to ski these without fear of losing our lift tickets. Ski patrol is pretty staunch about keeping people out of the woods. At least there are a couple of really nice glades that they will let you ski. They are heavily posted with sufficient warning of natural conditions.

Your pictures brought back many memories. I spent 4 years in the early 80's sneaking around the trees. Used to love going big off the cat track across Atlas. Zeus was always our uncrowded favorite. Chair 5 was rarely open and the glade was waist high brush. On really crowded days we would drive up to the dead end next to Olympian and ski down. At night we would ski the T bar line for fun. The was some great woods next to Illysian Fields.

Well, the t-bar is gone and is a trail called Alcemene. They gave it a black diamond!! Probably b/c it is narrow. They changed Iliad from a blue to a black as well as Eleysian Fields. So a few things had changed.

We missed Olympian. Oops. Totally meant to hit it, but kinda forgot until we passed it while driving home. Shit. It looked really nice too. They blew huge snow on it making it steeper than it actually is.

We skied from chair 5 all the way over to chair 1, riding chairs 4 and 2 in between and on the way back. Iliad and Fields were so nice, and Odessey had a race going on, so we totally forgot about Olympian.

There's a great shot between Zeus and Trojan, but they bust people for skiing in there. Its too bad too, b/c the run is fabulous. Ski patrol was everywhere on sunday, so it was a tough poach, especially since I was wearing my brigh orange/red jacket. Next time I'll wear my black jacket. That saved me last weds when I was in the woods next to Fields. The ski patrol passed right by me while I stood still as a tree until they were gone. Had I been in orange, I might have caught their eye.
