camping at tuckermans

I am going up for and avalanche safety course in two weeks.

What are the chances of staying up there? What do I need if I wanted to stay in the Ravine? We are up for anything.

Or should I look for a hotel? What is your opinion?

There are probably other folks here that can give you better information, but what I remember is that you're allowed to camp anywhere you want in the WMNF without any kind of permit, so long as you're 1/4 mile from a trail and 200 yards from water (and in summer below treeline...). This rules out the ravine proper, but I'm sure there are spots not too far away that would suit.

Camping in the Ravine itself is illeagl. The closest sites are the Hermit Lake Shelters about 1/2mile from the ravine floor. There are several lean-tos with fronts on them and several without that would reqiure a tent or bivy to sleep in. There is also a designated camping area for tents. All this reqiures a fee to the AMC and is first come first serve.
Camping at Hermit lake can be downright brutally cold.Although there is a caretakers cabin and a USFS cabin, there is no place to get out of the cold. They are not open to the public. So bring every damn piece of clothing you own!

Are you taking the Chauvin Guides course on the 5th and 6th? A couple of buddies and I are taking that one. We booked a motel in Gorham...took some calling around to find a place, because there is some kind of snowmobiling festival that weekend. I don't think you want to stay up at Hermit Lake (where you'd probably stay for Tuckermans), as thats a good 2.5 hour hike or skin up the mountain. There is a lodge at Pinkham Notch, where the class is meeting (if you are taking the same one as we are).

I know there are campgrounds around there, but I don't know of a place you can poach. We are doing the motel thing so we don't have to deal with coming in late and setting up camp in the freezing cold.

The Cutler River Drainage (Tuckerman and Huntington ravines) is a restricted use area. You can camp in the lean-tos (there is a small fee.) There are also tent platforms, too. At this time of year, they're not too busy.

I believe there is still camping in Gulf of Slides, but I'd double check. (The GOS trail is a little tricker with a full pack.)
