i wasn't expecting much outta today. i was looking forward to meeting porter (great meeting you man!) and his brother and csb (from SJ) and his friend, but i figured making turns with some fellow skiers would be the highlight of the afternoon. well, low expectations is the perfect set up for surprises.

an awesome "ball of fire" sunrise and bluebird skies in MA gave way to snow coming down at a good clip 4 miles north of loon when entering the notch. cannon picked up an average of 2-3" i'd estimate, with surprise pockets up to but not exceeding boot deep. yea, small victory for the normally very snowy month of march, but i'll take it!

the usual run down starts on the front face with rocket being awesome snow and very fast but the bumps were scraped under fluff, blah. avalanche was also fast and variable with the new snow, bumps skiers left were a beast but managable. zoomer was sah-weet in the AM, making controlled very slow edge turns down the center. would do bumps skiers right later in the day which were crap until the last 30-40 feet which were awesome.

a tram to the top earned me the distinction of being the first person to duck the rope for taft slalom. FIRST TRACKS, WOOOO!!! i was really excited about that, i've never made first tracks on fresh virginal snow. and it was awesome snow on the edges (in the AM at least, this would get side slipped later by whimps
). the rock ledge was fully exposed and dangerous, but easily avoided. powdah depth ranged from 3-6". upper hard really had the goods all day long. little thin with some brush sticking up, but worth dealing with.

pressing my luck, i looked down middle hard (see my earlier post from two weeks ago, hehe). i decided to try four turns and bail if needed. five turns later, i was giggling with glee as the powdah in the troughs was boot deep. variable under the powdah made me work hard. well worth the effort until the final pitch, ick. i hacked turns on 2" of fluff covering frozen grass and occasional rock. not cool and not worth repeating. but yey for me for grabbing first tracks down ~1800 vert feet of untouch powdah, heh.

porter found the da' goods in vista way of all places, which i'd estimate probably had boot deep freshies when the lifts first started turning. boot deep was still had in occasional sections when porter made the suggestion we head over there from his previous trip down that trail. definitely the highest quality powdah to be had today.

after repeating the taft/upper/cannonball quad route twice, i was tempted down lower hard by boot deep freshies. the first innitial pitch was spectacular. i tore it up and let out much verbal praise in the process. below that first pitch and through the flat run out was scraped with occasional ice and control was hard to come by. worth it for one run, not worth repeating the ending though.

rounding out the report, upper cannon and ravine were spectacular, tramway was variable scraped and fluff, middle cannon was an ice rink, middle ravine was fast and fun, paulie's extension was tramway styled variable but steeper, and ummmm, paulie's was...

let's just say i made one really dumb decision today. i said something along the lines of: "well, paulie's has been the best damn trail all year and i'll be damned if i'm not gonna find out if it is today!" let's just say i skied the bumps reverse style. eg, i turned on the very top/past the top of the bump instead of on the back side or in the trough... because the backsides and the troughs were frozen grass and rock with 2" of fluff covering the geological treats. heh. so if you're driving by cannon tomorrow morning and see tracks straight down the center of paulie's as you pass the front face in your car, that's me

yea, i'm one sick bird.

you wanna see a joke? this was cannon last year on april 6th. yea, there's still hope so let's keep our fingers crossed. in the mean time, tram closes for the season tomorrow *tear*
