Cannon 03.18.04 - boot deep in freshies all day

driving north on 93, i was getting discouraged. where was all the snow? certainly there should have been more than a trace to a few inches covering the ground. entering the notch, the skies let loose and old man winter was crying light snow flakes. cannon's report did not lie or exagerate! 7" with up to 11" drifts when i arrived and add to that it snowed all day! this was quite possibly my best day ever on skis, i had so much fun today it was insane.

preface: i hope you guys appreciate what i went through today to gather details for this no bull report. taking a day off from work, all the base damage, being forced to take fresh tracks down virigin trails covered with a foot of fresh, etc.

usually hit the front face first, not today. went straight for the goods. warmed up with profile skiers right on natural. 6" of powder on top of scraped and worse, not the greatest. still an impressive warm up run. back up the quad for vista way, sensational!!! boot deep powdah! stayed skiers left to avoid the rocks and such, and repeated that one. taft next, my goodness that was good. upper upper hard was fantastic like last week, lower middle i wasn't feeling. middle hard, boot deep fresh with occasional knee deep! things got ugly on the last pitch though. much better than my hacking effort last week, but still not for the faint of heart as it was guaranteed base damage. the rest of middle hard was insanely good, almost dealing with that last pitch again for.

back up for my first of FIVE, count them FIVE, mittersill runs (a new single day record for me, yea, it was that good). taft race course is really nice until the elbow by TB which is a little thin (relatively) then decent cover to the double. from there, i played it safe on barron's run... boot to knee deep freshies! i either seemed to avoid or just didn't care about the issues anon had on this run regarding his post for yesterday and bottoming out. based on anon's description, i think they got quite a bit more snow which made the barron feel less thin than it might have the day before. (?)

i'd return four more times to mittersill and got top to bottom firsttracks completely untracked boot to knee deep power on three of those runs (at least after untracked after passing by the double chair). pretty much went all over the place and will say only this: the best snow was where the trails were the least wide open. hit dirt, grass, trees, and rock a lot as there's not much under the powder and you off course can't see where it's only grass vs. rock. and since it's really light powdah, you pick up speed really quickly.

but to hell with my bases! i've never yelled and screamed and laughed so much in a single day of skiing. seriously, if you were at the mountain today and wanted to know where i was... you needed to only stop and listen. guaranteed base shots at mittersill though, but SO SO worth it.

i tell yea, there is NOTHING like stopping in the middle of a run in knee deep and seeing not a single track any where except yours. especially when it's 3:30! yea, there will be plenty to be had this weekend. guaranteed base damage though, i ain't kidding!

for the rest of the mountain, i didn't ski much. ducked for paulie's which was quite tracked up and found it much better than last weekend, but still a lot to be desired and not worth it. bumps under zoomer lift are still crap scraped bumps, just with some fluff on top.

was thinking about the whole rope ducking thing from the previous thread today while skiing. i saw a lot of people not familiar with cannon coming down taft slalom. some guys, before i could scream a warning, went skiing right over the rock cliff because the powder had covered it up. that stuff isn't pretty under the powder! suffice to say, i'm of the opinion that you should know what you're getting yourself into before doing so. and holy crap were there a lot of people ducking onto taft! lftgly, i think you had a good point in that last thread. i'll still be reporting what i ski, maybe not being so brazen about it though.

it snowed ALL DAY at cannon and in the notch. i'd estimate another 3" fell today and it was still snowing when i left... until you left the notch, then the sun came out!!! even when skiing at north facing mittersill, the clouds and sun got lighter and the day got brighter. cannon cloud in full effect!

i'll definitely be up there again on saturday. any one down for meeting up for some turns? i'll be at the peabody base lodge at 8:15 with a two-fer coupon.

Oh man nice report. I'm sure it was sensational. No doubt. I will probably be up there on Saturday and should have a lot of friends with me. I'll try to meet up with you but if not I'll see you on the mountain no doubt.

Can't wait for this, its going to be awesome.

I'll be sporting the rock skis.

porter
