While the East has "underachieved" weather-wise since the 1st weekend of March (Where Have all The Nor'Easters Gone? Long Time Coming!), 2 minor systems resulting in an elevation-sensitive 6"-8" last week was enough to motivate me to day trip to Cannon on Sunday. Glad I went!
The best conditions were definitely to be had on the upper mountain, which offered very nice packed powder, so I spent most of my day riding the Cannonball quad that serves the upper 700' or so of the hill. Everything up there was in pretty nice shape, including Tramway & Vista Way, Upper Cannon, Skylight, Upper Taft & Ravine. I also took a turn at some woods shots that are visible in between Upper Cannon & Profile, although I now understand why there where no tracks in there - you get in some nice turns, then end up in an area that is all grown in, and you have to traverse & slog your way. Still, the fun of exploration is not knowing what you're going to find.
The visibility - which was quite limited through at least late morning - got better towards Noon, so I finished up my day with a hike over to Mittersill. Glad I did, as I was able to find a bit of fresh tracks on the side of the trail, and it was a lot of fun. By the way, even though it was a Sunday in March, I skied on to the lifts or tram every time - I never experienced one delay.
Too bad about the upcoming mid-week warm up (how many times have we said that the past 6 weeks?). Sure hope there's decent orographic snows on the backside. But yesterday was proof that even modest snows on top of a well-established base does wonders. :!:
