according to this morning's report, cannon is calling 25-32" new snow from the storm. two feet sounds about right, i suspect near three feet in places was more due to drifting as the wind was outrageous today.
i arrived at tram lot to get turned towards peabody with the tram on a hold. tram would fire up around 10:30. i arrived at peabody and was being directed toward the lower lot before the lifts open.... impossible! myself and every other car until they got the "lot full" sign up took a left turn into the upper lot to see for ourselves. not having the tram open had an effect, but more importantly, people were showing up big time. by 10-11pm, it looked like a typical saturday afternoon crowd wise, not a friday. peabody quad was delayed opening but not by too much. cannonball quad was a solid hour delay or so.
on to the goods! the snow was definitely NOT powder. at least powder as i define it. it wasn't excessively moist, but it definitely was a thick snow that wasn't loose. steep trails were needed to even move through untracked. not that there was much untracked as by 11 or so, the entire mountain seemed pretty much tracked out, even a few select shots.
despite the lack of light fluffy powder and getting packed down good, the snow was incredibly good. front five were all great snow with avalanche skier's right taking the cake. snow was consolidating into uneven mounds but wasn't bumping up by late in the day.
the upper mountain plaid ole' sucked except for skier's right on taft. the wind was howling. one tram ride, we got the hardest slam i've ever experienced when the car was going into the station. wowzers. profile was boiler plate from the get go and vista way was rocks and scratches. icky icky icky. too bad upper mountain couldn't benefit from the storm. the wind was blowing straight away from the east and hard.
once the summit opened, it didn't take long for a conga line to form on the saddle. to who ever broke trail through the four foot drifts.... THANKS!!! i learned the hard way that fresh untracked in 2-3 feet sucks when you can't build up momentum. never thought i'd be saying i wish the snow was less deep..... nailed an occasional drift into my waist and an occasional face shot when i finally got going.
there won't be any untracked at cannon tomorrow, but the packed pow is fantastic and really fun to ski on. word on the woods is they're not worth it, still way too much rock and stump. the good news is this snow will make an awesome base and with the storm systems lining up like airplanes coming down for a landing, it won't be long now!
