snow storms? we don't need no stinking snow storms! before jump turning my way down a narrow packed powder chute on mittersill, i remarked to another skier "we're new englanders, we make due with what we got." and so i did.

during the morning the groomers were great for warm ups. i dunno how they fared the rest of the afternoon though as i pointed my sticks toward the natural stuff. middle cannon looked down right nasty most of the afternoon for what it's worth, and links of course were sliding fests. snow overall was edgable and plesant with the warm bright sun making everyone's day. this is the type of weekend that is every skiers dream. warm, but not too warm. soft snow, but not too soft. afterparty on the deck at the lodge and people drinking beers halfway down taft slalom on chairs they swiped from the summit building. here's the break down:

front face: didn't like the bumps on avalanche (actually, didn't even bother with them!). paulie's was AWESOME during the AM and is REALLY hairy skier's left up top. there's DRY patches of grass showing now. patches! still has the best snow on the mountain, which is amazing. zoomer lift sucked with huge bumps, lots of space in between them, and scraped between the bumps (*pre-released binding* *recovers and hops about on one ski* *kick save and a beauty!* "bye bye mr. ski! thanks for nothing run away device!"). bumps skier's right on zoomer were fab in the PM. banshee glade is damn thin, but doable.

taft/upper&middle hard: taft was okay with occasional rockage in the bumps skier's right (first hand rock spotting right here!). edgable all day with pockets of fluff. upper upper is just nasty. lower upper was groomed (later scraped), but soft stuff skier's left. middle rocked my world! took it twice and "whatever!" to the rocks and grass and dirt (although the last pitch is quite nasty). had an epic run down middle in the AM staying far skier's left on the last pitch (variable, keep your toes moving and eyes open). ducked the rope for MH cut-thru which i was hoping would have more to offer, it's just a straight line through some trees *yawn* took the middle run out in the PM for bump goodness below lower hard. this stuff needs snow, but who cares, huh? we're used to this stuff by now!

upper/middle/lower closed: packed powder and edgable, but thinner than i'd like for such tight quarters.

the rest of the day was mittersill. took three runs which included two first descents for me through some nice narrow chutes. one intentional, one an accidental discovery, gotta love it when that happens! suffice to say, there's still a few square feet of boot high untracked to be found if you know where to look.

aside from that ;) as expected, things are still getting progressively worse each week and this week is no different. the snow from last week was blown clear off the mountain, so nothing new. it's still mostly packed snow with lots of rocks to avoid. taft race course really bumped up big up top, especially around the tuckerbrook option. i REALLY enjoyed some options i took today. if you know where to look, there's plenty of goodness to be found.

just wanted to add more thoughts about middle hard: that last pitch is getting so nasty that i wouldn't be surprised to see mid hard roped pretty soon. the first and third turns are rough, but it's easy to avoid the junk on those. that last pitch, even on my first descent which was epic and probably my best run down mid hard ever, i got tangled up in some nasty stuff. it's only gonna take some yuppy complaining about base damage and the rope is going up, i hate to say it.

iiiiihhhhh

and the rain is coming this week... I guess it will mean the closure of a lot of trails. Don't know how it was in New England today, but it was near 50 in the Laurentians... I was in t-shirt few times...

The backcountry is still excellent here. The powder changed to some snow more wet, but as the base was enough packed, it was some awesome conditions on my usual spot.

On another spot today, there is a guy who was snowboarding, helped by a snowmobile. the skidoo passed in almost every trails of the mountain. So most of the trails were unskiable, except the super spot of the mountain. The only problem is that my ski plunged down in the deeeeeeep wet snow, more than 3 feet. Even though I wasn't going fast, I heard a CRACKKKK. This wasn't the binding releasing my boot... no... this was the ski..... broken in 2. OUCH ! Right in the middle of a supersteep pitch in 1-2 feet of wet powder, this was quite problematic, cause it was almost impossible to go down... Luckily, this was my last planned run of the day. Those were my PR skis (not my usual rock skis) It shows me once again that the recent skis don't worth the hard wood of the 70's skis !!!

Honestly, I don't know if you only selected the pics not depicting the situation (or putting some pics of another day), but these conditions doesn't look that bad

those were all of saturday. the pics are deceptive. those taken on piste were on the two thinnest trails at cannon, but the rocks and grass didn't show too well. those at mittersill were good cover ;) but most of mittersill is barren too.
