Was going to ski MRG today but changed plans bc I wanted to show my brother what a snowboarder looked like. He's just learning to ski and so far had only skied MRG --- which actually turns out to be a great place to learn (when you're the only beginner there, you can get private lessons at the group rate!).
Anyway, I hadn't been to Cannon in a couple years. They still groom way too much. And since my brother was just beginning to appreciate bumps, I realized that joegm speaks some truth when he rails about the lack of intermediate bump runs. Mad River really has tons, but at Cannon the few bumps are all on somewhat steep slopes. Still, he had fun.
On the whole, I was somewhat pleasantly surprised after a couple years away. I skied Kinsman's glade in the morning and had a lot of fun. It's a nice run where they've left enough trees that you feel like you're actually in a glade. Quite bony at the moment, but still enough snow there to make it enjoyable. Tramline was closed and from the looks of it properly so -- it's probably still barely skiable, but only if you don't care about your bases. The groomers were all reasonably nice -- the snow was soft and pleasant, even in the morning before things really softened up much at all in the warmth. Only occasional icy patches, and great cover. Skied bumps on the front four, which were nice. Middle hardscrabble also had good bumps and nice cover and reasonably soft snow. Hiked over to mittersill a couple of times and though there are a few icy and rocky patches, the skiing is still excellent. I really expected things to be crunchier in the morning, especially since it was cloudy in the am, but that wasn't the case at all.
I discovered some fun off-piste gully and tree runs that I had never skied before as well --- conditions are great in the trees with firm but not icy snow and still plenty of it to cover all the stumps+roots.
