New thread for those interrested.

Hamdog,

That's about where Cannon was when I came in. If you have a cat driver who hits the elements, either on skis or a board, that's your best bet. I actually do most of the building of the elements by feel. I build the landing first out of the snow I have available and then put together a takeoff that matches the landing. I don't have a 12', steep takeoff and a 12' shallow landing; that landing dictates a fairly short shallow takeoff typical of a beginner hit. If I build a 40' long, 45 deg. landing three cats wide, I can pump up the takeoff steeper and longer with a longer distance to clear. The actual specs I determine by feel. I can feel what the transition of the takeoff is like in the cat while I shape it. I also have hit enough of them to know what they will feel like later. If you don't have a driver that hits the stuff, you will have to ride with them to let them know when they are getting what you want to see. Not all drivers are going to like you looking over their shoulder, so communication will be the most important thing.

As for the actual elements to have... just don't have three tables or three step downs. Three different hits of different sizes is better. The beginner table should be small enough for a newbie to clear the flat top, but have a very long landing and a tame takoff so if someone hits it with too much speed, they won't drill themselves. Pipes... pipes are tough. If you don't have one, you're not on the map. If you have a bad one, you're even worse off. To have a good one takes alot of snow and some serious time. Rails are good. Again, several different sizes and types with a beginner flat rail real close to the ground.

As for Cannon's park, No Lftgly the park is not going to move. The pipe is. I plan to build the pipe at the bottom of the park (on Lower Cannon) this year to eliminate the nasty crossover at the bottom of Parkway. Unfortunately, the park is only slightly higher on the priority list than bump trails ;-) so I will be lucky to get anything built for Xmas, much less a couple of 30-40'ers.
Pray for snow! (and enlightened management)

thanks, i'll let BS know that philosophy....build the landing first, then form the jump according to the landing and how much snow they have to work with. it just seems like common sense to me, but then again i didn't really notice that that should be the way to build the jumps until you pointed it out.

i'm not sure if the guy who builds and grooms the park actually rides all the features. i will find that out. the landings always seemed to be super short, so if you didn't land 'just right' you hit flat.
does cannon only have one cat that grooms the park? that's all BS has and i think they only groom it once or twice a week. then the snowboard school maintains it the other three days. then the other two days left in the week it just doesn't get touched at all. it's all rock hard ice, and they don't seem to give a sh.t. and the snowboard school doesn't do sh.t either from what i've seen. it's really sad, so that's why i stepped up to offer to help out in any way that i can. i'll be raking the jumps and landings throughout the day when i'm there, and i'll have to get on the groomer to groom the park more than once or twice a week. what's funny is that the BS website says that the terrain park is 'maintained' 5 nights a week this yr. that doesn't mean groomed 5 nights a week though.

thanks for the info.

Tip for easy maintenance:

Build the jumps so a cat can drive around the takeoff onto the deck and then down the landing without picking up the tiller. This will allow for nightly resurfacing by any cat driver durring normal trail grooming without having to take extra time backing up and maneuvering. The takeoffs can be maintained by hand between specialized reshaping a few times a week and after storms.
Check out these pictures of hits from last year's park at Cannon:

This was a int/adv stepdown with a beginner table to the side to siphon off the Wallys and keep them from scraping off the landing. You can see that a cat can get around the ramps to till the landings.

Here is a straight table hit. Again the cat can avoid the takeoff and drive right up onto the deck then down the landing thus avoiding the need to reshape the takeoff every night which is what takes the most time and skill to groom.

Galen
Cannon Mtn Park Cutter
ziwiki@hotmail.com

galen, that's a nice job posting that info...i for one appreciate your effort... keep it up

Now if I could just get the mountain to support my efforts in the park more... Oh! and I have all those ideas about bump trails...and the Hardscrabble Drainage could use a few more expert trails..and I could redesign the Links-and about the... Man can I get carried away quick!

Gimmee Snow!!!

man, i haven't seen jumps like that in about 3 yrs. i'm kinda losin it over here. thanks so much for the details on it all. nice!

got any picks of those 40'ers you were talking about?

Would you like to jump this one ? (flying 70' long begin to be way too long for me, especially in mid-winter)

end of afternoon... so dark a bit

Here's some park porn for you Ham!!!

'bout 30' from lip to lip

Same hit - old schoolin!

30' table

Jumped - 40'er lip to lip

60' from far left ramp to lip of landing way right

oh geez. I'M LOSIN IT! man, how nice it would be to ride a good 'ol east coast park.........where it's done right. that 30' table is money. those 3 set up where the left one is a 60'er is sick. i don't think i'd have the sack to spin of that one. straight air triple grabs though for sure. yum yum!

and that pic that frank has.....look at those next victims right were i like them to be. if i saw those friggin idiot's sitting there i would land right on them.....intentionally. and the kid skipping up the landing of a 70'er(supposedly)........well, there's no words to describe that.......dumb ass. this is why there needs to be 'park maintanance' or 'park patrol' all of the time, or someone who does laps in the park all day long. i used to love yelling at stupid people like this, and jumping over them too.......especially mom who traverses the table. it aggravates me so much to see a picture that demonstrates the ideoaucracy(sp) of this so well when some ripper is about to hit the jump. i could cuss for days about this, but it wouldn't get me anywhere. geez, where ever this is, the mountain should do something about this.......it's part of the responsibility of having a park. mountains need to step up and do something about this(maintain/patrol). that's a nice booter though.

thanks for the reminder of what REAL jumps look like. now if i could only get someone to build some here like those and maintain them.....at least the landings(i'd rake the take-offs myself if i had to). i'll be building alot of bc booters this yr too. there's one mtn where i am going to try and set up 3 or 4 in a line in the backcountry. it'll be a good year i think. sorry about the rant above, but that's my HUMBLE 'snowboarder' perspective for ya. ;)

Nice pics Cancat !

Hamdog, lol. I was on the chairlift, when I took the pic. It is a very bad angle to see if the jumper above was in the line of the boarder below. In fact, the jumps were done to give people a special angle and unless he completely missed his jump, he landed at least 25' beside the other guy.

The flat before the landing is badly shown by the pic, it was really long, at least 30-40' long. I think that 70' was possible on this jump for a person enough crazy. 80' probably too, flying to the end of the landing.

This is one of the only big ones that I took last spring (St-Sauveur, april 27 (it's not me on the pic))

Cool cause we were flying on a great distance...

that's a nice lookin floater there aye. the landing looks kinda flat for the size of a jump it is though. you said you hit that booter? how'd the landing feel? those big huge floaters are fun. similar to a couple of the big ones shown in the other posts above. nice pics guys. thanks again.

i don't know if i'll ever be able to convince Big Sky to make the MUCH NEEDED improvements to the park, but i'm going to give it a shot. that's the most i can do though, right? i haven't heard back from the guy who i was in contact with about the park who works for BS, but i'll follow this situation up as soon as the season starts. i sent him an email with all my jump specs and a little explanation about how they should do away with the pipe and focus on jumps and rails only......and how they need to keep beginners out of the park. i might've been a little too straight forward. oh well, i'll be in touch anyways. thanks guys. i'll keep posting here as long as the topic is of interest so you have that ever so delightful 'snowboarder' perspective. L8r on....

haha, for the "ever so delightful snowboarder" perspective. But it remains a great thing IMO. May be the jibbing is a bit less *understood* on this powder junkies website, but snowboarder or skier, what's the difference anyway... and it's good to have your opinion !

For the jump and landing, what you see is just the side of the jump and it was a little bit steeper than how it look actually. It was just perfect for a smooth landing, although I really prefered the big air of St-Sauveur at the end of 2001-02.

For the one of the pic, the max air length wasn't passing the 60', I think, but it was way enough long for me to do 50' on it. Only problem I got is that I hurted my left thumb on one of my landings... 2 days before a final test at university... but a chance, I write with the right hand. Let me tell you that it was my last big jump of the season !
