Cannon this weekend ?

Hey, Jim Roemer talks of the biggest Nor Easter since december... for this week !!

Here, we have some crap in the north, despite they got 2-3" of snow yesterday night (FINALLY !!!!!!!!!!!!!) to cover the ••••• ice of last weekend.

I'm possibly heading up in Charlevoix for the 27-28 weekend, but I think I'm free for the coming weekend. Is there some people here that would like to ski at Cannon... or in another mountain of New England ?

I won't hit Cannon if I'm alone, cause without a guide, I risk to stay too much in the open official trails, which look less amazing than the off-piste/backcountry terrain !

I guess Cannon could be an interesting place to avoid the crowd taking advantage of this snow. Burke Mtn could be a great choice for me too... or some other mountains in the region !

I might be able to ski cannon this weekend. I think I probably will be able to. However, you might want some rock skis. I think cover will be pretty good, but still if we were to do a lot of off piste skiing then there will be many obstacles. I have some very good ideas. I know the mountain very well, but as foolish as this may sound, I know someone, rather young in age, who knows the mountain like no one I have ever met. There are some spots I would love to ski next weekend baring the snow factor which i dont think is a problem.

porter

I admit that the fact that the tram is closed for the season gave me a "cold shower", but I'm going to see the storms and will take a decision later !

It would still be quite cool, but as I have not skied Orford so far this year (including 9 of my top 13 best trails ever), I couldn't take a sure decision right now.

May be a 2 ski days trip could be possible... I'm going to see...

it is very likely i'll be back at cannon this weekend. definitely for one day, maybe two if it's good! frank, no worries about the tram being closed as the summit is still accessable via the cannonball quad.

Hey, Jim Roemer talks of the biggest Nor Easter since december... for this week !!

he's called for that a few times since december and we've yet to see a storm deliver half a foot since the epic foot of fresh the day after xmas! i'll believe it when i see it... but i'll admit i'm VERY excited about this storm after believing for the second time that i skied my last natural snow day for the season.

6" of the wet base buidling stuff would probably be enough to make this weekend awesome. a foot would make it epic. let's hope for the best, if a foot of fresh falls, this weekend could be the best of the season.

Yeah, still accessible by the Cannonball quad, but way longer if you take the Kinsman glade all day long ! ;) (hmm, not sure if this would be skiable anyway)

ouch... just seen the ski report.

even with 9-11 inches of new snow, there is almost no black trails open.

looks bad

Sorry the storm couldn't do better for you. Even with a foot of fresh, there are still going to be rocks to be totally honest with you. Sorry!

porter

I don't care of the rocks... what I less like is the patrollers trying to catch me in the closed trails

Well I skied almost the whole weekend last time without seeing anyone else, much less a patroler. With the tram station closed there wont even be a patroler down there to say anything. I don't think it would be a problem. Rivercoil and lftguy what do you guys think about the cannon patrolers.

porter

cannon's patrollers are mostly concerned with people attempting to skid safely down middle cannon and the links, not people with a head on their shoulders and willing to take some risks for quality turns. i've ducked more ropes than skied open trails somedays without any one batting an eye. this past weekend i couldn't believe how quickly taft got tracked up after my first tracks despite being roped.

quick story: earlier this season in december, i foolishly decided to track down a "trail" at cannon i like to call upper closed (not well covered that day). approaching the bottom of upper closed, i noticed a snow making pipe sticking up 2 feet above the snow! i was in tight quarters with speed, and decided to throw myself down and slide to a stop as a safety manuver. i came to a stop a few feet above the pipe and an open trail. as i came to a stop, a patroller skied by -- looked right at me -- then turned the other way and kept skiing.

for what it's worth, on a holiday weekend i saw patrollers at the bottom of upper ravine handing out warnings to people who were ducking rope. i believe this was during snow making time, so there was some risk to both equipment and skier going on. besides that one incident, i've never seen pouchers or rope duckers get even a warning. border to border is kinda the unspoken and unwritten word from my experience.

any ways frank, as porter mentioned... we both skied blacks at cannon last weekend and some of it was great, some not so. while the snow total is under the 12" jackpot level, it will be more than enough to make everything except tramline and the glades sweet. just gotta duck some ropes to get to the goods ;) and watch out for some rocks such as of taft. last week was a ton of fun, i can only imagine 9" on top.

to hell with imagining!! i took tomorrow off from work and i'll be reporting on the goods! see you guys saturday!

...well if we publish it on the internet, aren't we violating the 'unspoken' code? Constantly posting reports of closed trails may not be in our best interest.

That said, some of the best ski patrollers on the planet work at Cannon. They are there by choice, and they aren't there to play 'ski cop'. For the most part, I think they're on the lookout for anyone who is a danger to others (i.e the Bode wannabes who race 'human slalom' down the lower mountain.

"Don't ask, don't tell" only works if people are discreet. If people are being really obvious about cutting closed trails, it forces the ski patrol's hand.

Re: the snow making trails. Skiing over a pressurized hose can cause the hose to break -either right now, or sometime later if the damage isn't noticed - with serious or potentially fatal injuries to a snow maker. I think that's part of the reason for an emphasis on enforcing the closure of trails with snowmaking in progress.

I'm happy to see that the patrollers of Cannon are not some idiots as in certain mountains that I won't name.

Nevertheless, the choice is tough, but I think I'm going to have to pass my turn this time too... and I will stop to say that I'm going to go, unless I'm sure at 99% that I'm going to go for real. With the conditions, I lost my road partner (and room co-payer) and the motivation is not so high about skiing, even though it would be a super nice to meet you guys ! (and gals if there is some )

Anyway, all is still to confirm, but it looks bad... especially as many of my friends have an incredible trip in view for the weekend. You guys should come over here instead to ski in the powder on some 80" natural bases...

Sorry to see that you can't come this weekend. However, it is probably for the better as the conditions will not be stellar. Hopefully, Next year will prove to be more adequate in snowfall. Hope you have fun skiing this weekend where ever you end up.

Porter

Riverc0il just killed me...

what can I say now ?

Tough to believe it's so different in 1 day... reading Anon and Riverc0il.

I was sure that it wouldn't worth the ski, with the tram, the conditions and the lack of base, so when a giga-trip has been done for this weekend, with my usual ski buddies, I said yes. Now I'm sitting in front of my computer and I don't know what to think. Almost impossible to cancel anyway so I don't have to think anyway

Life is crual

frank, just remember it's not cannon at it's best. there's no base to anything, plus the glades really aren't worth ducking into (at cannon at least!). i caught everything just perfect for myself, and i'm sure the snow is gonna go fast on saturday. there will be other days if you can't make it! this is my fourth powder day at cannon this year, which makes one fourth of my days powder days this year... so it'll happen next year if you can't make it this year.

Well,

I hate to do this to you Frank. But since I was at cannon last week with 9 inches of new snow. They have received upwards of 16 inches. I can't wait to go tomorrow. Sorry, another year I am sure. I should be in the lodge rivercoil. I have a someone to ski with tomorrow who should be able to take us places that you have never dreamed. Bring the rock skis!

porter

Oh, it smells like some federal elections soon if you're still at work ;)

Hey, back from the Massif du Sud on my side. Reading the report of Riverc0il, it's less tough to have missed Cannon as today is defintively one of my best days of the season. Some very poor conditions for the Massif du Sud, but still ranking 14/10 for any other ski areas in the province

2nd best day of the season, after the untouchable december 19 at la Réserve and equal to the feb 7 & 8 at Alta & La Réserve.

Tons of pics to follow... via Zoneski ;)
