Doublehead 3/6

I got Doublehead today. C?mon get your minds out of the gutter! I?m talking about North Doublehead and the Doublehead Ski Trail of course!
I arrived at the parking lot and hit the trail about 10:30am with moderate temps and little wind. This was my first time skiing this particular B/C run and I was very hopeful as the snowpack was nice and deep at the base.
No new snow to sample but the skin up was very nice. The Civilian Conservation Corps has done another wonderful job of creating a trail that is packed with character. It?s not a terribly difficult trail but it has lots of nice switchbacks and a few sections with a double fall line.
The No Bull was deep natural bases. About 20? down low and 4? up around 3000?. Boot and snowshoe packed powder with no rocks or ice. It looks as if lots of people use the ski trail as a downhill loop when snowshoeing or hiking this area. Too bad, as it compromises the downhill experience a bit with all the boot traffic. Not that I?m against being able to do so, I just wish better judgement would prevail.
Something that bothered me was the scavenging for wood for the woodstove in the cabin that sits at the top of North Doublehead . It?s my particular opinion that if you cant stay warm up there without a fire then perhaps you shouldn?t be up there. Go to Attitash. They have a nice big fireplace with a bar next to it. I saw evidence everywhere of the whole tops of trees busted off. Not blown off or sawed off but ripped off. Buy a good sleeping bag, buy warm clothes, buy a stove that runs off white gas and make lots of hot chocolate with it. That?s how to stay warm in the backcountry without making an impact. It will take decades for that area to recover.
On a lighter note, the run was nice. I?ll definitely try to hit it on a powder day as it has some great potential.
I got a new digital camera and will posty pics when I figure out how to post them.
