Here's some more pre-season diversions...
Ever looked up while riding one of those snazzy high-speed quads and wondered "How does that thing work?" or "Why am I not plummeting helplessly to the ground?"
Fortunately for all of us, ski lift operation is tightly regulated in most states, unlike, um.... banks?
Here's a very interesting link to a review of destructive tests done on an old Winter Park center-pole Riblet chair just before it was replaced- just like the ones I've spent many, many hours riding.

This summer the old Sheer Bliss Riblet chair was removed at Snowmass and replaced with a high-speed. Tha lift had a weld at the base of one of the towers break a few years ago, fortunately it fell along the lift line and didn't cause major damage or injury-- the tower was replaced.
