Flying and checked bags

While Jason started a multi topic thread on this issue, it turned into just a discussion about gas prices and is now 12 pages long. So I thought I'd ask the other part of the question in a new thread...

I can't imagine anyone would use any other airline then Southwest if possible. Am I wrong? With some (US Airways) charging people extra just to walk on the plane and SW still offering 2 checked bags, I can't see any other way to fly for people who have to check 2 bags (skis and cloths). Also, I think it's hard to beat SW's prices even before you factor in the extra cost from the other airlines for any/some checked bags. Anyone not fly SW when they have that choice? Is there a good reason to consider other airlines?

Hey...isn't there a rule somewhere that you have to have actually skied within the past 5 years to post here? [-X

Don't you have something to fix...

Sorry, but correcting your "I hate winter" mentality is above my pay grade.

I can see the lynch mob forming now...

Don't try to throw me under the train... I never said I disliked skiing... it's only that I'm getting old and my knees can't take it anymore. I had been skiing since I was 6 years old so I paid my dues as long as I could. Also, I only dislike winter as I can't ski and, as everyone agrees, lots more to do in UT when it's warm!

Can't I complain to someone about "people" being off-topic? :-k :D

It depends upon the route of course. If I want to fly direct to SLC, I have to use LAX, which means $11 a day for parking vs. an easy drop-off and pickup at Burbank. Needless to say Southwest is not an option for my annual flights to Canada. But we do need to keep close tabs on those baggage fees when comparing airlines. Also, the baggage fees on the legacy airlines are waived if you can get preferred FF status, attainable in some cases by credit card use as well as actual flying.

Understood. I was looking for flights a few weeks ago and SW jacked their prices up from $99 to $160 so I looked around. US Airways had prices at $130 so I looked at them. I don't buy tickets very often so I saw their little trick.... an extra $15 per bag... ANY bag! So that automatically added at -least- $15 each way to the price. Obviously they are just trying to -look- like they have low fairs. A skier is probably going to have 2 checked bags so, using the numbers above, on SW that could be $100 and on USAir it could be $160 (at least!). Big difference.

I usually fly with a large Bazooka Tube. So I always check SW first as I really don't want to hassle with the "baggage game" all the other airlines play. I know I'm going to get the lowest price from SW and I don't have to worry about how much extra I'm going to be paying for my baggage. I just see it as a no brainer.
