At 8am it was spewing wet snow with 2-4" forecasted to fall throughout the day. So I got a few things done but I blew off the rest of my chores and went up to Greek Peak for the best of the snowfall.
On my way there, roads were treacherous, but mostly slushy. I saw all types of frozen and non-frozen precip on my way to the hill. I slid into the parking lot around 11am and parked in the first bay. The parking lot was barely half full.
No lift lines until about 2:30 and they were never more than a couple of minuts long. Lap after lap on chair 1. Just 3 runs to ski, Iliad, Odyssey and Elyesian fields, repeat. For the first 2 hours I telemarked alone. I didn't see any other pinheads there. I was on the early side for the free-heel crowd. There was fresh snow on the sides of some of the trails. I was sure to track it up and even ski beyond the snowmaking area, as covereage was getting better by the minute. My Super Stinx flowed smoothly through the 2" of fresh damp powder on top of a breakable crust.
My friend Mike showed up around 1. He was skiing alpine, so I swapped out for alpine gear, a fresh pair of dry gloves and a dry jacket. I changed into a different skier, clothing and all!. We did more laps on Chair 1. Ran into a few other friends who were free-heeling. By that point I was thrilled to have my heels locked, as by the 4th hour (took no break) I was beginning to get tired and hungry.
It snowed throughout the day and the surfaces were powdery. It was on the warm side, and sometimes clouds would come in and sock in the hill. The snow would get soft and wet. By 3:30, it was 33 degrees. The new snow was getting packed and the snowfall had tapered off. My legs were tapering off too, so I bid the guys farewell and called it a day.
I started 2 hours before everyone else. They only skied another hour after I left. Without the trees and other interesting terrain open, skiing 3 trails gets a little boring after a while. At least the snow was nice, each turn was sweet and the company was good. If it keeps up like this we'll be skiing the trees soon...but unfortunatley the forecast is not looking very promising. I heard nearl 60 by thursday (eeewwww). Spring conditions again.
It seems that it gets warm every week, but eventually we get snow and then it gets warm, it gets cold and they make a lot of snow, which eventually turns into springlike conditions, sometimes corn, sometimes slush or wet powder. Then it freezes and gets bullet proof with death cookies and then the cycle starts all over again. Though we don't have tons of snow as we should this time of year, I still manage to ski 2-3 times per week, and it hasn't been terrible. We just have to enjoy what we have and pray for more snow!!
