Greek Peak 12/6/03

Opening day at my local hill. Was thinking about chasing the big dump, but decided to save $ and go local and enjoy the evenings at home in front of the fire and in the hot tub after a day skiing with my local buddies at Greek Peak.

They had been making snow all the last week, but only had one run open and another run, close to being ready to be open. It snowed over 8" and there was plenty of snow on the other trails, but they were strictly enforcing skiing on open trail(s).

One of the 'trail closed' signs was completely covered with snow and unreadable, so I decided to 'play dumb' and ski past it. WOW. Mega fluff and no sign of the earth. As I got down the last pitch before the mid-way flats (the meadow) a snowmaker on a snowmobile came roaring over and told me to not continue any further. He insisted that there wasn't enough snow b/c his snowmobile was bottoming out. I doubt I would bottom out there, but being warned I scooted back over to the open slope.

I telemarked for 4 hours today! Yeah, it burned, but I really improved greatly and was rippin it up after a frew runs with another telechick. She was done after 2 hours, though I could have stopped, I decided to stay out. I skied alone for an hour, then ran into some friends including my skiing sister Pam. I kept up with the alpine skiers pretty well. That is the beauty of the short trails at Greek Peak. I can really get into telemarking there because the runs are short.

By 2pm I could not do another telemark turn. Pam needed to get a drink so I decded to swap gear and go alpine. It was so nice to be able to just slink down onto the tongues of the boots and relax those muscles that had been flexed all day keeping my body from catapulting forward. It got really crowded by that time and the lift kept stopping. Lines were over 15 minutes long. After 4 more runs we were done. Tired, cold, hungry and ready for a beer.

It had snowed all day long. Surfaces were powdery, but got pushed around by mid-afternoon. Teenage snowboarders built jumps and then sat in a big pack spread out nearly half-way across the one crowded slope annoying many.

There was just one way down of intermediate skiing. The Alpha (bunny) slope and its lift were also open as was the Magic Carpet, but most people were on the one route down (2 trails, Elysian Fields and Stoic).

Tmrw they will have a 'black diamond' trail open and hopefully some other terrain with natural conditions and another lift It snowed all day and its still snowing. Great opening day at Greek Peak!

It's in central NY, between Binghamton and Syracuse. Just my local ski hill. Not somewhere you'd go to on vacation.

nuthin wrong with that... i'm think about earning a few turns at the blue hills ski area , 8 miles from boston, on sunday... metro boston is getting croaked right now

yes----greek peek sounds cool.....whats their vert drop?

i skied blue hills in the early 80s.it was fun place....they had a jbar and chair going--i believe the jbar is now gone? i did hear they picked up good snow outta this system---big blue!

I skied Greek Peak the day after the two-foot Xmas dump last year. Was the best day of the season for me. Only 950 vertical feet, but a fair amount of woods and everything was open.
