Gunstock 2/22
I brought my 7 ½ y/o son to Gunstock for his first learn to ski day. Man, what a great feeling to see him linking turns before he even had his lesson! His lesson was at 10am so that gave me an hour or so for some pre lessons and practice.
During the two hour lesson I had an opportunity to ski the mountain I had grown to hate many years earlier. At 10am the summit quad was still not open and not even spinning despite low winds, temps in the upper 20?s and a growing holiday crowd. Around 10:45 they started spinning it at low speed but weren?t loading. At 11 I headed over to see what was up as a few people had started gathering in the corral. The word from the lazy lifties(5 of them for one quad at the bottom) was the lift was closed because it had snow on the seats that needed to be cleared. So don?t go to Gunstock if it has snowed overnight because they wont have the summit lift running. The dusting of snow on the seats was perhaps 1/8in deep. I couldn?t believe it. They told me it would be at least 20-30 more minutes while two of the five lazy lifties would smack the snow off the seats. But they wouldn?t take my suggestion of smacking the snow off as the chair came down then loading skiers as the chair came around the bullwheel on the other side. Instead it was a big joke between the five lazy lifties to do the opposite and smack the snow off in the loading zone so nobody could get on.
I looked back at the Ramrod Quad which had a twenty minute wait to ski 700 vertical feet when it became clear to me how appropriately that lift is named because I felt like Gunrock had once again given me the ramrod.
At 11:15 I loaded on the first chair to the upper mountain, anxious to ski the few inches of snow in the ?glades?. Of course they were roped and Hot Shot was closed. If they couldn?t open those trails with as much snow as there was Tuesday then they may as well take them off the map and abandon them to Mo Nature.
I abandoned any hope of skiing the top, glades or Hot Shot, which I have tried to ski for 20 years but has never been open with me there. So I headed over to the learning center to watch my kid. That was more fun than skiing anything at Gunstock.
After his lesson we took a couple runs down the Gunshy lift to practice turns and stopping. Things went pretty well and we headed to the Ramrod to try something more challenging for him. Let me say that I never knew how far the human legs can turn around without coming off until I saw my son fall. There were two times when I looked at him and I didn?t know which way to unscrew his legs.
So I had fun teaching and skiing with my son but I will not be back to Gunstock even if I have another free pass. Next time I?ll give it to someone I want to piss off .
