Jay Peak 2/21 morning report

As I sit here and eat my bacon, egg burrito I am still high from the morning's powder pigout.

Mike R and I set out early and got on the very first tram with the early-birds.

The Face Chutes were open, so we went right for it, because I wasn't sure if I'd be riding the tram again this morning. I had never done them, so I really didn't know where to go. We went in and I got tree'd out and had to back up to head over to where it opened up. In doing so, I got my ski caught under a buried limb and almost got sucked into the tree well. Not the best start, but I got myself free and found the chute I wanted and it was deep and fluffy.

Mike and I got split up and I ended up coming down on the Bonnie side, so I dipped into Canyonlands.

Finished off with Expo Glades which was all fresh fluff.

Rode the Bonnie with a guy and his son from Syracuse. They wanted to go over to the other side and wanted to join me through Everglade, so we did it from the very top. One of my faves.

The snow was really deep in there. I was choking on the snow as I got face shots. Can you say thigh deep.

I met up with Mike again at the GMF and we went up and did BBP, and this was definitely the pick of the morning.

We were both coughing on face shots and giggling like children.

Next run was a North Glade. That thing really opens up for many fresh lines.

but we ended up paying for it with the low angle and thigh deep snow.

getting out was a bit of a slog, but well worth it.

Next run was over to Vertigo. We wanted to ski back to the condo for brunch, so this seemed like a good way to go, though it was very tracked out and very narrow. Definitely not great, but lower CanAm was sweet and I think that would have been a better choice from the top, though it was blowing at the top and visibility was an issue.

We are done with brunch and the sun is shining. Getting ready to head back out.

WOW...that is what I call an up to date TR. Thanks Sharon.

And there is more on the way on Sunday night.

Not much of a report to add but...

Saturday 21st (this AM) at Jay was *** epic *** . One of my 10 best pow days ever. MANY waist+ plus deep carves and endless mouthfuls of snow. If you can get there — try — well worth it especially if they get more snow.

Stoked. \:D/

I just noticed that I initially got the date wrong, but it is now corrected. The day is Saturday 2/21/09.

After brunch I went back out with Mike and Marina. Marina just learned to ski this year and I'm guessing she's about in her late 30s. She totally gets it and she was ripping up Haynes and Jet by the end of today.

We took her through the easy woods and she was just getting used to the powder. She never has skied on powder like this. All her days have been at Greek Peak and one weekend at Gore. She was totally rocking out.

I slipped off and got some runs in through the woods in the Angel's Wiggle drainage. I don't know what those glades are called. I don't think they are on the map. They still held some nice untracked snow in the afternoon.

Then I went over to Timbuktu. That is such a sweet glade, especially out of the ski area boundary. The snow over there was still fluffy and there some deep places of lightly tracked snow and some untracked shots here and there.

For apres ski we went over to the International Room where Rick Redington and the Luv put on a fabulous show to over 200 people. It was a great scene with children and adults dancing and having a good time. The band was just fantastic.

The latest forecast includes for Sunday
POTENTIAL FOR HEAVIER SNOW RATES...PERHAPS 2 TO 3 INCHES PER HOUR.
AGAIN THIS ENHANCED SNOWFALL TO OCCUR SUNDAY AFTERNOON THROUGH
SUNDAY EVENING.

Snow. Snow may be heavy at times. Total snow accumulation of 12 to 18 inches.

It doesn't suck to be here right now.

It is already snowing. We are taking it slow this morning as we'd like to save ourselves for when the snow deepens. With the weather report I read this morning, we may not get out of here until Tuesday.

I am a bit sore and tired. I found that skiing here is much more physically demanding than skiing at Alta. Here most of your turns are "must make". The trees are tight, plenty of big soft snow piles and fresh snow, and this is much more taxing than even a big powder day at Alta.

It is definitely worth the drive.
I'm aware... I wrote that bit about the six-hour drive to make me feel better.

Since we no longer get frequent updates from RivercOil and follow-up from Steve@JP, I haven't been following news from that part of NE lately. I checked the website and see that Dr. Weather is no longer the in-house meteo guy. Obviously, this storm was predicted correctly, but how close were they in the total inches of snowfall?

I'd say the resort's report is accurate.

I am pretty critical of the Jay reporting, but this weekend was right on. Saturday was some of the best snow I have skied in years.
