Jay Peak "BS" campaign is in full swing!

What a suprise, Jay Peak web site was calling for 4-10" Thursday night for the weekend...so everyone can get all charged up to make the long drive up for the weekend. Of course they were the only ones in the whole state of VT with that forecast. Every other weather site and news station in the state is calling for rain until midnight and then flurries. So today they have changed their forecast to just flurries. Am I the only one out there who is tired of the completely false snow reports coming from Jay Peak. 4-10" of snow, yeah right! Jay Peak really insults the its customers intelligence. And Roemer is another story all together. Total "BS" from all of them.

So, to be clear, our plan was to list a potential of 4-10" all week, change things up on Thursday morning, then hope folks wouldn't check back on the site-still being motivated by earlier week posts? Sounds a little Machiavellian to me, but anywho. We had it on good accord that accumulations would be in the 4-10" range earlier in the week and we updated as soon as our forecasters did. In this case, it wasn't the aforementioned Roemer, but two Boston folks we look to.

And, again, if the Machiavellian approach was the direction we were taking, it'd still be saying 4-10". We updated when we heard back from our folks. And, to be fair, forecasting positive news is in lock-step with forecasting negetive news. You can't complain about us 'not forecasting rain', and at the same time have an issue with us 'forecasting snow'. They're two sides of the same coin.

Same thing happened in California. At the beginning of the week we were supposed to get 1 1/2 to 2 feet this weekend. Now it's going to be just a few inches.

I've expressed my opinion before that anyone's forecasts beyond one week are essentially worthless. The corollary is that the 4-7 day forecasts are speculative. They are in the right direction more often than not, but will frequently miss exact timing or intensity of storms. One of the other things they can miss is the rain/snow line, as steve alluded.

Hey Steve , Maybe it's time to re-open the golf course ,or have a golf ski special  Well it can only get better.

I'm with Steve on this... I challenged him with questions earlier this season, and he replied with a good amount of honesty about Jay's goals.

Again, if you're skeptical, and take the time to check all of the other reports, why not just accept that Jay is going to PROMOTE the best possible situation? do you expect a company to put large letters across their website reading 'PLEASE DO NOT COME THIS WEEKEND'...

also, how can a 'FOREcast' be a 'false report' ? Jay might be posting the 'best possible situaion' iteration of the forecast, but the 'report' part would be what ends up in the daily tallies.

Last, who among the Jay regulars hasn't had the experience of 'nearly nothing' in Troy before starting to climb 242 and find great snow? I'm sure that if Jay were to underreport, and then it gets out on the boards that the snow was better than the website states, that Jay would get slammed as well...

Steve-- You can't win.

since this is the "no-bull ski reports," i think it is important to call out ski area reporting when it is not accurate. it seems like the whole point of online trip reporting is to inform other people about the "real" conditions from a "real" skiers point of view. if ski reports were always presenting exactly what to expect on the mountain (a la MRG), there wouldn't be much need for trip reporting online except to post pretty pictures. but when the snow/trail reports on the official sites match up well with actual experience, there is no reason to call out the ski areas and indeed a time to post that the official reports were accurate. i have tried to do this recently, especially when i have been critical. reports from this past weekend from jay were accurate. they even went so far as to tell people not to expect powder when i was finding 6" of fresh on almost every run (albeit in the woods).

While I don't want to start any sort of frightening lovefest here, this board has been pretty fair about calling us out when we've been overzealous and letting us know when we've been right. Folks here seem better tuned than in other spots for sure. I'm not sure how this topic got life breathed back into it as the reports for the past few weeks have been pretty benign. Anyway, snow please.

Steve - you seem like a pretty decent guy. Can't figure out why you keep reviving a thread with a title like this!
