Jay Peak - Feb 2nd :: Very good!

After a little solo trip in the backcountry looking for new lines, i got to the mountain at about noon. I was in no rush to get to the slopes... I wasn't expecting much...

First run down the can-am seemed like a mistake for the first few slides on pure ice... but then i got under the chair and saw a mix of new snow and some crud which seemed to old an edge... And lift line was even better... Little powder on top of the bumps... a bit slippery but still... better then expected!

After a few runs down the jet to warm up, i was out in the woods to find that the fresh stuff wasn't affected much by the rain! Sure there was a crust but it wasn't splippery at all... The woods were fast but there was about 4in of snow on top... A little powder and no rough bumps underneath... great! The runs on tram side were less affected even... So i was lapping the flyer all afternoon... So much fun that i didn't even look at the clock once. Go the stateside lodge at 4PM with an unexpected grin on my face... I was expecting to do just a few runs and head home... Quite surprising!

It snowed all day at Jay yesterday and it snowed through the evening also... I'm guessing that the people on the slopes today had a blast! Thumbs up to the grooming team who layed down a fresh carpet of recycled snow all over the mountain... pretty much everything got groomed... Exhibition, Can-Am and such that see grooming once or twice a year got a fresh start... Impressive!

Now, what's next? Can we expect a huge dump soon... That "could" be fun!

I was there Saturday as well. We tracked up Beaver Pond by ourselves from 10 AM until 2 PM when we finally started seeing other tracks in there. It really was good, seemed to have little to no rain crust, and was 4-6 inches of wind distributed snow. Took the crowds a long time to get around the death warning that you were going to die should you venture off the groomed tracks (this was put at the top of the bonaventure, to dissuade anyone with an adventurous spirit).

Flyer and tram were on windhold all weekend, didn't get off until Sunday at noon. The skiing on the jet side had the unmistakable rain crust feel, remarkably the tram side did not. Weird conditions but had a good weekend in BBP and everglade areas. Took a skin up to the top on Saturday, and encountered pretty severe conditions in Valhalla/Green Beret area. Once into the trees it was slightly better, but no where near as good as BBP.

This post made me smile, as we spent the week at Jay with our last ski day being Friday, 2/1.

Although the tram and Flyer were both closed, we took the Bonnie up, ducked a few ropes and skied BP and BBP for any number of laps with HUGE grins on our faces. Each time we came through our tracks had been covered by the falling snow. BEST skiing of the week IMO.
