Jay Peak Jan. 29-30

Thought that I would contribute my thoughts on Jay Peak this past weekend in particular, and season long in general. Firstly, as a long time season passholder at Jay I have been very disappointed in the management of the mountain this season. The examples that I could site are numerous, but I will only mention the most glaring error: the foolhardy decision last fall to not do the normal undergrowth trimming in the glades, Jay's signature runs and raison d'être (too many man-hours spent on the golf course perhaps??). Even in a normal snow year the glades would still be skiing though knee to waist high shrubbery due to this omission. This season they are practically impassable and downright ugly from a visual perspective. One of my friends commented yesterday that he was scared to take his little one through the kiddie glade because the stuff poking up was taller that his daughter! Anyways, barring about 4 feet of snow the glades will be very poor this season.

On to this past weekend, Jan. 29-30. As usual the website snow report had no relationship to what the situation actually was on the mountain. Case in point, on Friday Can-Am, Vertigo and Deliverance and Powerline were listed as open, on the weekend they were closed. Speaking of Can-Am, both it and Exhibition, which had received snowmaking during the week, naturally were CLOSED! Classic Jay, blow snow so as to close a trail. It was very frustrating to see these well buried trails closed while the rest of the mountain was either very icy (most of the groomed trails after about 11:00am) or very bare with lots of rocks, grass and stumps (everything ungroomed). One would ride up the Bonaventure Quad looking down at Liftline and seeing more non-snow stuff than snow, and it was open, and then look to your right and see Can-Am beautifully white from side to side and closed. In terms of glades they are still very lean with an ice base, what I call skiable, but not ski friendly. If you like your $1000 skis the only glade one can ski is Expo. Trails like the Haynes, Jet and The Derrick became true skating rinks in the afternoons. It was quite amusing to watch the tourists trying to negotiate the first 100 yards of the Jet which largely was better ice than that which I played college hockey on. The UN and Kitzbuel were largely medium sized bumps separated by ice rinks. Even the teenage idiots were avoiding them.

In summary, with no snow in the forecast, Jay is not the place to be. Those of us with season passes just have to grin and bear it and hope that Ullr smiles on us in the next two months.

I haven't been to Jay yet this year, but I've noticed that extremely annoying tendency to list a trail as "open" on the snow report, and then you get there and it's closed. Somehow this just pisses me off far more than it would to just list the thing as "closed" in the first place.

I was there both days this weekend, and I'd have to say that was a pretty accurate assessment.

My best runs both days all came before 0930. The main traverses (Goat, Northway, etc.) were downright glacial by late morning. There were still some good lines to be had through BBP, and I even managed to escape without a single core shot or major base/edge damage.

After the traffic this past weekend, I'm waiting on at least another 12"-24" before venturing out again.

I went up to Jay on Sunday and the conditions were good if you knew where to look.

THere was lots of people on the slopes and the parkings were full. I can understand (after having two people died on their icy slopes) why Jay closed down the Can-AM... Imagine stupid tourists trying to ski down IN THE MIDDLE of the icy can-am! Of course under the lift where artificial and man-made snow mix the conditions were great (i couldn't resist going under the rope!)

I also went into Exhibition and it was rideable... not great, just icy man-made snow but i still understand why it was closed! My friend started sliding out of control and almost went into a tree!

What i don't understand is WHY jay peak is not grooming those trails? Why spend a couple grands on the Can-Am to layer it with ice and then not groom it and leave it closed? Why not groom the Exhibition? It's easier to do then Can-Am?

As far as cutting down more wood in the glades (even the small things to spruce up over the summer) i couldn't care less... I miss Jay Peak the way it was 10-15 years ago when the glades were unheard off and we had to watch for ski patrols before getting out of the woods... Powder was there every weekend and the woods were never skied out!

But for now, Jay is still good but it really needs snow!

Depends on when they finished making snow on it. You've got to let the excess water drain out of it for a day or two before sticking a cat on it, or you'll knock all of the air out of the snow.

Oftentimes priorities change when areas start building projects. They take their eyes off the ball and focus elsewhere (a glaring example is Les Otten's little adventure).

I noticed that not a single NASTAR race was logged there this year. So I called to check and they admitted to not having set it up. I did a little investigating by phone yesterday, since I am considering a trip there on Friday. They called back to notify me that a course will be setup this Thurs-Friday. A-la-peanut-butter-sandwich! I'll be looking for the followthrough...

I know how snowmaking works. Jay stopped making snow on Can-AM on tuesday and moved it's gun to the Exhibition on WED and stopped on THU... There was plenty of time for excess water to get drained from the trail and to groom the Can-AM even FRIDAY during the day... would have been ready for the week-end!

.

On the snowmaking topic, generally you do need to let the water drain out, however, last week was so cold (-20 or more some nights) in the north-east kingdom that I doubt much liquid water was left in the snow. Case in point: Burke who made snow followed by grooming all last week.
