Almost had to feel bad for everyone lining up at the ticket window today as I was leaving shortly before noontime. Lured into Jay by reports of eight inches and epic powder days last weekend, most Jay skiers and riders found some pretty raunchy conditions following the rain/freeze event earlier this week. Dust on Crust dominated off the groomers. Amazing how brilliantly white the place looked despite the conditions.

I managed to find myself 6-8" of fresh on top of a rather crunchy surface in the spots I had expected. The Jet was frozen groomer tracks only a few runs after the place opened. Major dust on crust action on U.N. which was interesting. Haynes was closed for snow making and Derick was closed as well. JPSP signed Kitzbeuhel as being extremely nasty so I didn't even bother. Montrealer, Northway, Hell's Crossing, Wiggle, et al could best be described as firm and crunchy, perhaps icy on occasion.

My back is still killing me from last week's epic two day powder romp so I kept my exertions to a bare minimum in search of the untracked but the early bird definitely got the warm today if you knew where to look. Wouldn't touch the woods with a ten foot pole at this point. Solid base though, hopefully this can be retained and developed. Jay has more terrain open now than it did at Christmas last year which certainly doesn't suck. Recuperating tomorrow, today was more than enough for my weekend.

Not such a bad day after all...

Jet and Montrealer got icy real quick with everyone on vacation... Not to mention the crowds in the morning... But you kind of expect it when most americans ski on Thanksgiving, Xmas and March break!

Haynes was great... It was closed due to snowmaking... but the man made stuff was light and fluffy. Perfect temperature for snowmaking makes for some great turns! Also, Derreck Hot Shot was getting some blown over stuff from the guns that we mixing in quite well with the snow that fell on friday. Soft bumps all over. No ice: Great!

After spending the morning over on the Jet area, we tryed getting some stuff heading toward the bonnie quad... But nothing great... 8in all over... I don't know where the 10in went but it must have been on some isolated drifts!

A good day at the mountain! Great for November!

One thing that got to me was that huge sign on top of closed trails about "getting your pass and charging you a 100$ on top"... something like that... I know it scared most people... But when most of your pics on the official Jay Peak website were taken on closed terrain, i think you expect people ducking the ropes in order to get the same goods you're displaying all over your website! Just my 2cents!

Again, great day on the slopes!

Gotta agree with Big Jay on that one. If it's on the site as promo...come on.

They aren't the only resort doing it either.

I missed the sign about pass pulling and charging $100, where was that? Probably directly towards the knuckleheads dropping into Kitz Woods. I couldn't believe it! Okay, last week was questionable but certainly doable. But this weekend? Faghettaboutit. Also, I can understand not dropping into Haynes due to snow making. I am sure patrol has had a really tough pair of weekends and hauled some people out of situations they should not have been in.

Agreed about Jay using promo footage beyond the rope being suspect. Where else would they find 8"? Oh, I am sorry, was that 10"? I certainly didn't find 10" on Saturday on any open trails. Or unaccessible by lift for that matter but if there is no rope is it really closed? Now that is a philosophical question for the ages.

The sign was posted on top of the Haynes.

I understand that most tourists would have blasted down the Haynes even tough it took care to cautiously go down the Haynes because of all the guns blowing snow all over the place... You had to be very careful... You couldn't see more then 3ft in front of you at some point! If you stayed on skier's right, you could go down the Haynes with no problem and great snow... I didn't see any patrol running after riders ducking the rope... But they were warned.

Again, i understand the point of the sign... but if you want to get the reported 10in, you need to duck the rope!

The closed trails were really the only rideable ones....and they were great.

There was a non-stop stream of rope duckers. Always with patrol just feet away in their shack, and sometimes with patrol standing right at the rope. We took the sign to mean "don't be stupid, don't get hurt, don't make us come rescue you.....have fun".

They were blowing an incredibly kind man-made. Very fine and light. Aside from tough visibility on Haynes, and deadly water bars at the bottom of Derreck, these trails in great shape for Nov.

I have to disagree with that. Not when they are making snow and you could be hiking or looking else where. I duck often enough in the right circumstances, but I try to respect snow making crews while they are working especially when the sign is stationed in front of the only trail that has snow making online.
