After viewing the recent photos of the day and checking snow totals, taking the chance and coming off the fence and heading to Jay tomorrow, leaving the Laurentians behind. Will be skiing Jay on Saturday (unfortunately the busiest day of the week ?how many tour buses can you count) but hopefully will be able to get some quality runs in before the masses show up usually 10.00 -11.00 am. Weather looks good light winds new snow mild temperatures.

Jay Peak
Report for Jan. 28

Made it out on the trails by 8:30 am Saturday morning. Winds were being clocked at over 50 mph on Friday (Jan 27) which closed the flyer and the tram. On Saturday morning the winds were still hammering away at the summit at about 50 mph, however after minor delays all lifts were running. With this type of wind the snow that fell last week was quickly blown off the groomer trails (Goat, Northway, etc). We started on the stateside area skiing Timbucktu a few times as the snow quality was quite good with most of the roots, stumps, and rocks covered up. Moved over to Canyon Land which also had good coverage. Buckaroo Bonzai glade with its low elevation and south eastern exposure to the sun was in the process of melting down exposing rocks, roots and stumps etc, Great snow found in Beaver pond and Beyond Beaver pond and the areas in between which doesn?t receive as much traffic. Yesterday was a busy day at Jay which had an impact on the snow. Groomer runs had bumper to bumper traffic with people sliding all over the place on wind blown icy sections. The inbound glades also became worn down under relentless traffic as the snow quality did drop from 8.30 am to 4.00 pm. In general snow pack not that deep in the surrounding valley as fields around Jay have no more than a few inches of snow cover and grassy areas are starting to show alongside the roads. A couple of major snow storms are what is needed to fix things up .
