my man haskell from fred's freeride has k getting the guns going in full tomorrow night with lift access by next wednesday if the 7 day nightime low predictions holds accurate.. take it for what it's worth...man am i jonesin!!!!

I'd definitely say that's possible, they're snow report has been updated today to say EOD "next week"...

Still, it'd be nice to see someone open this weekend!

That make it November 12!!! Killington worst opening day since November 18, 1970!!!!! Second worst opening since I was born in June 65 (I only have open/closing days starting from 1966-67).

I found this with sorting some old stuff.

Opening/Closing Days for Killington:
(years after 1970 are found in two seperate message posted by himself and frankontour in the mega Killington Discussion in May 2003 - 140 messages).

So here are a few more dates:
season,open/close,ski days,snowfall,snow on mar.1
1971-72: Nov. 9-May18, 192, 323", 126"
1970-71: Nov.18-May21, 184, 334", 151"
1969-70: Oct.24-May 4, 178, 264", 26"
1968-69: Nov. 9-May10, 183, 306", 78"
1967-68: Nov. 5-Apr.7, 154, 204", 31"
1966-67: Nov.14-May 2, 180, 254", 66"

thanks for these old stats... I should add them in the master chart of Killington seasons...

nov-12..... ahhhhhh the ski industry.....

wow... i love that you guys have this stuff...
worst opening in 30 years shoud light a fire under them (and if it doesn't, nothing will)

However, one thing to consider besides the corrupt early & late season attitudes of the ski industry is that except for this & last year, they've only opened the very top originally, with a download at the end of the day. They want to open top-to-bottom this year, however.

I'd like to point out that even in 1970-1971 season when they opened late, they stayed open till May 21st (latest of the group of years posted above) and recieved the most snow (334in). And I'm sure back in the late '60s early '70's they did not have quite the snowmaking techniques that they do now, at least as far as blasting 25 feet of snow on Superstar.

-Scott

Scott, as I mentioned numerous times. Killington close on June 21, 1984 (by memory-didn't bother looking at the dates) on Upper Downdraft/Cascades. It took them a few years to open in June again after having transfered Spring times operations to Superstar in around 1988 (It's late/so these are the approx. dates). They finally re-made it in June in 1992. The solution to making it in June with Superstar was to blow 40ft of snow on it.

1) You are definately right about the technology part of snowmaking now compared with then.
2) There is also the fact that the last decade has been warmer.

PS. If some of you are curious. Last June, some of us posted a few pictures (Early and Late skiing). A posted a serie of them. Pictures from late May 1984, 1985, 1986, 1987 on Cascades/Downdraft. Also some from June 1 & 11, 1992 and June 1 & 15, 1997. The discussions has Killignton with dates skied. I added pics in some of the discussions I added.

the opening page of the home page has " within the next few days "... the link to the snow report backs off that a little and leaves it more open ended.. but it appears, short of a major travesty of warm weather, they will do the right thing and not hold out till next saturday for the weekend crowd gate receipts... we're close boys!!!!!!! hopefully frank and the boys to the north of the border are close too!!!!... is there anyone else ready to boot the tv screen in the next time you hear /watch some bimbo newscaster gushing to wally the weather guy about the lovely mild temps!!!!?????

i hear your pain joegm, crazy newscasters... i *hate* "above seasonal" temps that they rant and rave about.

I agree, however, today I was watching New England Cable News, and the weather caster said that he was hoping to squeeze some snow out for the mountains next tuesday and wednesday. when the newscaster came in she said well we don't want snow and the weathercaster shut her down by saying well mabye you dont but i am sure the skiers up north do. Just goes to show you some weather men aren't all bad.
porter

That New England Cable News weather guy is named Tim Kelly. He can always be counted on to put a skiers spin on the weather as he is one of us. I've chatted with him on email and he's a real nice guy. During the season he narrates the NECN ski report, called the 'Downhill Lowdown', with same-day (or close to it) footage from one of the NE areas and he'll often be seen skiing in same. The report starts around Thanksgiving runs in the same time slots every week though I don't know offhand when those are (maybe check necn.com).

NECN rocks for weather. i don't have a TV, but i usually check their weather report videos online before i go skiing or hiking. i think they have the most detailed and accurate weather reporting for new england as a whole. and the NECN weather people like the winter as pointed out! woo!

actually, most weather people generally seem to enjoy snow storms as it keeps their job interesting. it's the stupid news desk anchors that are usually the one's bitching. ESPECIALLY bob oakes on WBUR (boston's NPR affiliate). if i hear bob oakes b!tch about the weather/snow one more time, i'm coming down to the station and giving him a piece of my mind!!!

i wish i still lived in range to get NHPR, as they have weather updates from the mount washington observatory which is awesome.

ya, tim kelley is always good to count on for snow, but it was a different guy today, matt noyes, tim kelley seems to have rubbed off on him
porter

that's good to hear about NECN and their guy kelley... i'm gonna try and find his email and give him a prop for that even though i don't get to see him cause i've got the dish not cable...i've heard that pinhead oakes before and river is right.. that guy is brutal!!!!...i really try to look at it as objectively as possible seeing as most people like it to be warmer rather than colder...but some of them are just so infuriating with the language they use... (my vote for this pasts week's winner for "weatherperson who needs a boot in the ass" for the boston area is some woman named chikage windler from channel 7 in boston...this woman has been out of control this week , bordering on hysterical when talking about next week's (hopefully) impending cold weather. and when tossing the football back to the despondant anchors, she just can't apologize enough for the " bad news" she just delivered. but i think river is again right about probably most weather people like the variety.. it's the foolish interplay with the anchors that spurs a lot of nonsensical gab... after chikage threw it back to the bimbette newscaster this morning, barbie doll, with a mug looking like she just reported that more americans were just killed in iraq or some other legitimately upsetting news, gives a big sigh and says in a whinny voice " I AM SOOOOOOOOOOOO NOT READY FOR WINTER, CHIkAGE. channel 56 in boston used to have girl named barbra conrad who was a skier and was pretty good about spinning it or at least throwin us a bone at some point during the 2 minutes... not just with natural either but with cold weather for fake, and how 15 to 20 f with a 10 mph wind is ideal for making snow, which i heard her talk about once and, upon tossing it back to the female news anchor karen marinella, almost fell of my couch laughing when looking at the look of horror on marinella's face. she was looking at konrade like she had 3 heads. so konrade obviously new what she was talking about... i actually ran into her skiing at burke 2 winters ago...they are not all bad for sure...but the ones who are, really bite it... a few years ago , channel 5 in boston had a news anchor named heather khan. after one particularly aggravating exchange betwwen her and dick albert, i fired her an angry email. to her credit, she responded and actually apologized saying she did not mean to offend skiers... i think she is out of the biz now, which is too bad cause despite her whinning, she was something to look at, for sure!!!! we should all post any particularly annoying actions (dates and times ) from any tv personality ( even the good looking ones!!!!) and IF their email is of public record, post it here and blast em!!!!i'm gonna go see if chikage's is on the ch 7 web site right now... ho ho ho!!!!... happy holidays, there, chikage!!!!

that's good looking out, salida, for the 2 at necn... funny story about how he shot it back at her too... i'll let em know

Here, on one of the most listened radio in MTL, there was a girl, doing the ski reports who was always super negative about conditions and skiing in general. We just wanted to shut her mouth... impossible to think she was a skier and talking in the name of the resorts....

It's the same thing here, for the weather, in general, radio people hate winter and it's easy to see it. I think I will listen them tomorrow morning just to see their expression while it's 10F in the city ! hehe

14h11 minutes before the ski season starts in the East.

LOL joegm!!! you're story had me laughing. mostly cause i used to do the SAME THING when i had a TV. how i'd hollar and howel at the anchors during their "banter" sessions about the weather!

me too, joegm i was dying reading your story about the news casters, I yell at the stupid news people cause they always whine when the weather man says we are gonna get a healthy 18inches to clear up the drought. If you download kelley's nightly weather reports from NECN he normally talks about something to do with ski country. He has been talking about temps for snowmaking since mid september. He normally knows exactly what we are talking about here, wouldnt be suprised if he reads this forum or one like it. I know one of the other weather guys personally at NECN they aren't bad actually. Many times Kelley will give localized predictions for snow accumulations on the peaks of the mountains(frequently uses mansfield, sugarloaf, jay, and cannon)
porter

one more bash on the newscasters, watching NECN again this morning and the same guy matt noyes says i think we might be able to get upwards of 6 inches of snow for the mountains on thursday, should be a good start for the snows sports that are ready to get going. he brings it back to the news caster myriam wright (spelling) and she says uuuuuggghhhh wintery mix why do we want that, then matt noyes says well we have a lot of winter enthusiasts out there who are ready for winter to start, and then she just yells at him ya whatever. man i was mad, i almost jumped off the couch on my fr*****in knee and screamed at her. lol
porter
