First, let me say that Killington is doing an excellent job with what they have to work with.
Nice clear cool sunday morning and I got to the mountain shortly after 9:00. They had groomed/ground up most of the main trails, and this made things passable in the AM, and at least left some piles to turn on in the early afternoon. Plenty of hardpack for all though. Took about a millisecond of venturing off the groomer track to see how rock hard the cookies and side stuff were. Only bumps I saw were on ungroomed superstar, and they looked frightening.
They were trying to blow on needles eye, in spots at Bear, and down chute & bunny buster at snowden. The wind was making it tough to lay it down in the right places on needles eye, but it did provide enough to keep things passable and even fun in stretches. It was still unpredictable in places with nasty scratch. Skeyeburst into wildfire was OK too... with enough piles to have some fun with - again, picking your way through scratch. Bunny buster and lower chute were actually pretty good as I made my way home - they left some nice jumps on chute.
Crowds weren't too bad, but it doesn't take many yahoos to freak me out in icy conditions.... and if there's a single gripe about Killington that I'll concede, it's their abundance of yahoos. The population started picking up later in the day (or they all concentrated on the same few trails) so I bailed about 1:30.
I'm glad I didn't skip out entirely... it was definately worth getting out for a 1/2 day. As I was heading out, I heard they were closing a lot of trails... superstart for example, as the scratch factor got too bad. Lot of brown around too. Very sad to see... but could be worse I suppose.
It rained on and off most of the way home, but not really torrential... here's hoping it didn't do too much further damage.
I now wait hopefully with a fresh stash of vacation but no good snow.
