Killington 3/22

Do you ever get that feeling of "What am I doing here?"

After skiing feet and feet of fresh snow over the last 10 days at Stowe,
and just generally more 12-24" days this season alone than the previous
two winters, showing up at Killington today to use up a free ticket cupon
(Warren Miller maybe?) was a little depressing to say the least...or at
least a shock back to reality.

Its odd how I've been to Killington three or four times this winter, each
time the snowpack has been smaller and smaller than the visit
prior...starting in October.

No off-piste was skiable and all open trails were man-made trails. You
wouldn't even want to poach anything because there is nothing more than 4-
8" of pure fluff over rock/roots/moss/deadfall, etc.

Superstar Glades usually have some man made blow-in but not today. BTW,
Superstar was looking significantly lower in late March depth than in
previous years, especially through the middle section.

Needles Eye...Usually a safe bet for some intermediate bumps/softer snow
on skiers right, nope, try again.

Has Ovation been open this winter?

I was able to string a line down through a good chunk of the Big Dipper or
Double Dipper glades (always get the names mixed up) as there was some
blow in and 4" ice base.

Skied some runs all over the mountain, not because any one area was
particularly good or bad, but because everything was groomed flat and all
skied the same. Until we got to Bear which was by far the most
interesting terrain. Devils Fiddle was open and bumped up, so was O.L.
The must've made snow recently over on Bear because most of the trails
didn't have that extremely fast, frozen granular groomed 10 times over
feel. It was more of a soft, chalky, dare I say, fun to ski, surface.

O.L. was playing host to the Sprint Freestyle Championships so there was
quite a bit of activity over there. Those guys and gals are phenominal
skiers who haul ssa through moguls then throw relaxed flips and spins
before landing in more moguls. Watching it on TV is one thing, but in
real life it is utterly incredible. They were practicing today for
Friday's competition.

This pile of snow will be around for a long time...

Devils Fiddle was very stimulating. Fun to pick your way down through
rock, bumps, and narrow paths on skiers right. There was a lot of snow on
skiers left, indicative of recent snowmaking. Be the star of your own ski
movie.

It was a good day of skiing, my legs were sore by the end. Nothing like
some good bump runs on Bear Mountain to make up for 100 groomed, frozen
granular trails. The weather was good with little, if any, wind, temps in
the 20's and low 30's, and occasional snow showers.

-Scott...heading north.

I remember when Killington was the primier eastern ski area. 20 years ago it was the place to go. Great snowmaking , 1st and last to open. Always adding more terrian and improvements to the ski area. Now they have become a real estate company.

OUCH!!!

I just started reading the report... Contrast you had is similar to the conditions I had last week (Thurs: Smuggs - snow / Fri: Sugarbush - artificial and icy). I need to get that report written, but I was skiing last night (maybe tonight also).
