I am thinking of trying Killington for a day trip on Monday, will it be too crowded to really enjoy it?
I have never skied Killington before and would like to give it a go, is this the time to do it.

Thanks

Personally, I wouldn't do it over the holidays. Better to wait for a mid-season midweek day.

i agree--i think it'll be a mob scene! what with the great amount of holiday skiers-boarders-curiosity seekers-partiers(wobbly barn is celebrating 40th anniversary)/kmart will be like wal mart.

i would give it a cpl weeks more to mellow out--then it wont be like ROAD WARRIOR on skis...haha!
brian o

DON'T DO IT .. DON'T DO IT..DON'T DO IT.. DON'T DO IT......PS, DON'T DO IT if u can, hold out till the monday after new year's day.. skiing is so much better when u are not aggravated

I echo the previous (non)recommendations but if you absolutely must do it then get there mega early, like 7am, to be on the skis and waiting when the lifts start loading at 8am (sometimes they'll even put people on a little before the official opening time). Ha, this is where everyone's hangovers from the Wobbly Barn can work to your advantage! You can usually squeeze out a good coupla hours before it gets really clotted, sometimes more if you move to the out of the way lift(s), i.e. ones that don't originate at a base area. Caveat Emptor.

I've stood in Killington holiday lines so long that we did the wave!Try something else or wait in my opinion.Killington has lots of trials to offer but I think you would miss out on that waiting in line. However, waiting in line to ski is still better than not skiing at all.
((*
*))NHPH

I thought the mobs didn't show up till the day after xmas, no? I was thinking about going out early day Mon/Tues to MRG or Bush. Figured the public schools didn't get out till Wed. so I'd be safe. Been there a few days ahead of time? Whattya think?

I don't know if the East is different, but at western destination resorts the mob scene doesn't start until Dec. 26. I had a couple of wide-open 30K days Dec. 18-19, 1995 at Vail. And that is a mountain I wouldn't want to be near from Dec. 26 - New Year's.

So I wouldn't worry about crowds the first half of next week. Just make sure you're well to the west of last Thursday's rain/snow line in choosing a ski area.

you know when it'll get good and reasonable facilities of mental alertness? killington---around jan10th onwards-

otherwise----i really feel-it will resemble circuit city on skis! everyone trying to clog up every lift and trail-and they WILL DO IT.

its much to much on the nerves. better having a break --revitalize--then attack the east fall trail in mid jan!

just my humble opinion-i have skied killington since 72. i know the meaning of the word/CRAZZEE.

brian o

killington sucks anyways, i wouldn't want to go there even if it was empty, there are alot of better mountains in New England, don't believe the hype

LOL !
Welcome back, Les !

Honestly, sorry but I mostly agree with Anonymous, personnaly !

Never went to K... but I don't necessary want to, with all the development done in the last year... especially the removal of the Cascade double chair... what a huge error...

I would say if you have to go.

Start early.

Christmas Day and New Year Day are your best bets, especially in the AM.

I skiied K on Dec 24 in 1984 or 85. It was reasonnable, not as bad as early season crowded trail like on Thankgiving weekend.

I have skied Killington at the holidays. As long as you know the area a bit, and use your common sense, you can avoid lines. For example, don't try to take the K1 summit gondola or Superstar at 9 AM. Park at Bear. And if you don't mind riding slower lifts (heaven forbid!!) you won't wait at all.

I'm sure that today, there will be more people than a normal Monday, but K will still be wide open.

Even during holiday weeks and busy weekends, K is still manageable. The key is to know when (and when not) to be at certain parts of the mountain.

not that i want to encourage folks to come to k, but as a regular i'm with steve. if you know how to ski k you'll almost never wait in liftlines no matter how crowded it is. get there early and know how to work the mtn.

It's not the liftlines that are a problem (but they can be), its the number of people on the trails and clogging the intersections.

For instance, Skye Peak. The Skyeship drops off 8 people every 10 seconds, the Needles Eye quad drops off 4 people every 8 seconds, as does the SuperStar Quad, not to mention the Skye Peak Quad which is a slower fixed grip coming from Bear. That's nearly 200 people per minute!!!! on one peak!

But Mondays are usually less crowded, even holiday mondays, than a typical saturday.

I used to work at Kmart and the people really got to me...not just the number of people, but the type of people can be a little disturbing to a country girl like myself.

If you must go, yes, start early. I would park at Bear and take a few runs there before heading to the Canyon. Around 10 it gets very crowded. You can go over to South Ridge for a few and back down to Bear for lunch. Eat around 11 and back out at noon to miss the lunch crowd. Come back in at 1:30 or so for coffee. The last 2 hours of the day are usually less crowded as most people can't stay out all day. So, if you time it right you should have no problem. That is the problem with Kmart though, you have to have a strategy or you will be one of the crowd.

I think all the ski areas will be busy after the 26th. I plan to ski on the 25th and 26th at Whiteface and maybe do some backcountry on the busy saturday of the 27th and head to Gore on sunday. That's my strategy.

My god... some pro-Killington on the board ! it's rare to see that, but welcome on board and there is no problem to defend this mountain. I'm sure it has some good points, especially when not crowded (it's fun to can ski anywhere without being strategic too much to avoid the liftlines)
