hit k on thurs and fri... woke up at 5am on thurs to alarm clock and the previous night's 11 o'clock weather report of doom.. (not having this guy tim kelley from necn is killing me
since my buddy gil was out of action this week i knew i was going solo. stumbling out of bed to the can, i decide to throw in the towel and just make it one dayer on friday.. stumbling back to bedfrom the can ( how's this for fate ) i noticed my comp monitor glowing.. i must have forgot to kill it the night before... what the heck.. i'll check the web site, i said... lo and be hold, k's got a 5am update that says it's snowing...back to the can for a shower and 20 min later i'm northbound. and in hindsight, praise the lord for the internet!!!!!!!!
thurs - pulled in to lot at about 915.. it was raining the whole way on 89 . stopped raining near bridgewater...must have rained at k during the night but changed over at some point and my guess was they got about 3 to 5 depending on elevation...thurs was cloudy pretty much all day... very cold , about 35 ( felt colder w wind) and windy at top off gondy for the first 300 vert, but once dropped down it wasn't bad at all. blue plate special of the day was the 3 to 5 of heavy chowda... no grooming took place, that was made up for by the whole lot a whinning and crying from the masses about the heavy snow... i thought it was great.. great stuff to practice in... fraud turns were instantly exposed. they had the gondy, glades 3 and the bunny busta poma spinning...lapped the bunny busta for 80 % of the day. got a lot of good work in .. not too crowded except for the psia instuctors clinics taking place ( probably about 75 of em )
fri- the standard small cheese and ceasar from the outback nightspot put me out by 9... woke up to bluebird and about 40 at the base...no grooming took place anywhere overnight... breakfast consisted of numerous soft baked cookies... i'm callin them soft baked becasue , again, despite the many groans heard, they were not the usual cookies found in say, jan, after the usual rainstorm that hits new england. it was once of those mornings where you walk outside and just are happy to be alive.. sort of... the glorious day was tempered by the fact that this just was not good for the big picture, but what are you gonna do!!!! what i did was , again disregard the edict from the mogul coaches at camp about 40,000 turns on the flats before hitting a bump....fri again had the same three lifts spinning... hit the poma for the first 2 hours and lapped the buster again which had formed sweet small bumps. by 11 started in on the glade 3 and the trail to the skiers right of rime.. top of it was still jib park but bottom half had better bump lines than rime... the psia guys were insisting on making gs turns on the rime , and ruined the bumps on it by noon !!!!!!. but that's ok cause they stayed off that skier's right trail ( i'm, awful with names ) fri was about 45 to 50 or so at it's warmest , with minimal wind. more crowded than thurs but not too bad. trail count was same on thurs and fri with great northern and it's variations off the g, the 2 trails off the glade 3, and the b busta off the poma...
damage report: overall it appeared a net loss from last week...fridays bluebird only compounded the warm temps, but i can see why they run that g 3 on rime .. it gets shaded pretty well and looked to be holding up ok... they blew a ton on the bunny buster so that held up ok except for the poma track which was falling apart fast. great northern may have problems in the next 48 hours in spots, but overall unless it gets really crazy in the next 48 to 72 they should be all right...weekend traffic won't help though... the base area by the gondy seemed to shrink by the hour and is rapidly becoming a mud pit... they are up to $45 us for anyone who cares about that.
PROPS: 1) to k- for putting out such a good product with no help at all from the weather so far 2) to k- for spinning that poma lift and making the lifties actually work manual labor and shovel around the snow to fill the grass gaps on the poma track... i just have a feeling that some places, loon comes to mind, wouldn't even make the effort if confronted with a similiar scenario, and would probably just shut it down with the " quality product " crappola line... running the poma really bled a lot of traffic off the glade 3 trails. 3) tele skiers- good tele skiers rule... they are so smooth and have such style.. saw about three or four of em again killin it in the bumps
ROCKEFELLER SALUTES: 1 ) to racers who insist on skiing bump runs like gs courses... come on boys and girls, the freeze is coming, u'll have your boiler plate soon enough... say it with me brothers and sisters " put your feet together now and ski some bumps...amen ( if you can ) sorry river!!!! "
sat and sun should be more of the same .. i doubt they will be able to groom anything before monday cause of the temps. interesting though that at about 3:55 pm on my last load on the glade 3, the air compressors could be heard blasting on the steep trail that drops off to skier's right just behind the glade 3 base on the little cut though connector to great northern... and at the bottom by the gondy , there seemd to be a big gathering of snowmakers at about 4:15p or so
next wed only from loon ( if they are still planning to open that day )
