I have had greatr like over the past 12 years skiing at Killington the weekend before Christmas. Saturday my streak ended, though the day started well. The sun was out, there were a lot of open trails, including natural snow trails and the Marketing Dept was claiming ~100 open trails. It was a little cool at the KBL ~0F when we got there, but the gondy was heated. Great skiing for the first 2 hours, then the crowd started to build and build.
My solidly intermediate wife, who had been having fun, staretd getting unnerved by how dangerously crowded the trails were. We saw some uncalled for collisions and started looking for a quieter trail to ski. The quiet trails were double black diamond natural snow trails marked with thin cover signs. Fun for me, not fun for her. She threw in the towel, with I never want to ski here again at 2:00 PM. I wonder if the crowds are extra bad this year because of those cheap season passes?
To the good, Killington did have trails open with sketchy natural cover which I prefer to having to duck ropes for a little peace and quiet. Escapade to Flume was empty during the height of the afternoon madness, as were Vertigo though the headwall was rock city even by my boney standards), Double Dipper, Old Super Star and Ovation had reasonable lines for my rock skis. I did some base damage, but that was repairable with a few minutes of P-tex candeling and some scraping. The K'ton snow makers had put a deep base on the open snow making trails and nairy a rock was visible on the well worked over likes of Super Star, East Fall and Cascade.
