Lake Placid, NY - 2/9/08

I generally feel many ski destinations lack alternative activities. However, Lake Placid is a definite exception to this rule - especially for the East Coast. Thought I would post some best of pictures of a low-key day around Lake Placid.

These 3 Great Pyrenees were the guard dogs for the weekend. They are quite stealthy in their white coats.

Modern combined track for bobsled, luge and skeleton. Rides were $80/adult - and the weekend wait was possibly 2 hours. Yet cheaper than Calgary by 50% - according to Tony's report.

Ski jumps. A little surreal to see modernity on the Adirondack country side. Potential development like this could employ lawyers for years/lifetime in Vermont. Never see the Olympics happening there.

Cross-country skiing in the John Brown Farm area (Yankee Abolishionist.) Don't worry - my friend pulling her baby is an Ironwoman competitor. She might take it as an insult if you stepped in.

Me. Or about as close as I come to playing hockey.

Notice the explosion in Winter Olympic Events. And the lack of US medals in 1980.

Chris,

Enjoyed seeing the pictures. I personally love Lake Placid and ironically enough have never been up there during the winter (we plan on going up sometime this March to hopefully catch skiing the slides at Whiteface).

Summer visits have been based around playing in the Adirondack High Peaks Wilderness, the extent of hiking there is just incredible. I just love that town and honestly think I prefer it to any "mountain town" I've been in New Hampshire or Vermont.

Maybe that's just the New Yorker in me speaking though! :D

I couldn't agree more. With the exception of aspen with its ski in and out capabilities, I think Lake Placid is the best all around ski town in North America. I might even rank Lake Placid ahead of Aspen, for its myriad of off hill activities, and lack of pretense.
