Last Minute Change from Mammoth

I have some family heading to Mammoth this weekend and we committed to it a while back. Mostly it's for their kids and I figured we'd have fun just hanging out for the weekend and skiing a few icy groomers. They had some friends just get back and they heard a lot was going t oclose. Obviously that was a false rumor (http://forums.mammothmountain.com/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=12472) .

My question is, any idea how the skiing at Big Bear might be?

I've got to imagine Big Bear will be worse than Mammoth this week, what with the warm temps we've had lately. Mammoth has had highs in the 40's this week on the hill (50's in town) with overnight lows in the 20's so it's presumably getting into a melt-freeze cycle. Big Bear, on the other hand, is looking at highs in the 60's and overnight lows in the 40's, so the snow will be deteriorating fast there until it gets cold again.

makes sense. Sounds like mammoth it is. Flights booked (it was cheap and didn't feel like driving) so I'll make the best of it before I head to BC next weekend.

Mammoth vs. Big Bear. Did you really just ask that question?

Even in a crappy year, Mammoth with man-made snow offers more than Big Bear ever will.

I'm not sure I'd agree with that. Big Bear has to deal with this kind of weather on a routine basis. The runs are hand-picked for rocks in the summer, a solid snowmaking base was laid down in December, and it's rare for the rocks to be coming up after one warm week after what I skied Dec. 22. It will be spring conditions but they groom intensively.

Mammoth will have more obstacles (as reported on Mammoth Forum last week) and ice: Big Bear will have more slush. Open terrain is comparable in both quality and quality. So given extra drive time/lodging cost I would definitely choose Big Bear. For someone who has sunk costs at Mammoth, that might be different.

You know that things have gotten bad when CAers are debating the relative merits of Big Bear vs. Mammoth. :?
