Loon 2/4-2/5

After Friday's deluge, Saturday began with bullet proof conditions. So bad, in fact, that the Ski Patrol closed some of the steeper runs.

As the day progressed, warmer air and sun softened the slopes to spring-like corn snow conditions. The last runs of the day were wonderful, though coverage was getting very thin on many trails.

Didn't ski on Sunday. Woke to gail force winds and driving rain. So much for the reports on NECN that it would change over to snow in the morning and yield 10-12 inches. The temps were in the low to mid forties at the base. (Is it me, or do those guys routinely over-estimate snowfalls?)

Better to clean the condo and head back early for the Superbowl commercials.

I went Sunday and not Sat. I tried the river Sat.
Sunday I woke up to rain and waited till about 8 to leave the Condo. At 8.15 is was pouring again. I went cause I was there. Upper Walking Boss was soft and smooth, Flume was still ok on the left side as you look up. Guns were placed on the sides of the trail waiting for the cold air.
Sunset was nice as well. I made it about 2.5 hours in the rain an called it quits.
As usual I enjoyed Blue Ox and Lower picked. Upper Picked had a few wet areas that could be easily avoided. Flying Fox and Cross cut had a few firm areas, but the snow was soft and fun in most places. Angel St was to firm and really was scaped off. I danced over a rock on Speak Easy that would have done some serious damage.

The Gondola was a treat on Sunday. Fast and the only dry place around.
There was no one in line or on the trails. I skied mostly top to bottom and got a good amount of runs in. I even went up the Gondola alone. (That happens maybe twice a year.)

I headed out early to catch the games at home. About 12.30 is started raining pretty good again after a slight let up at 11ish.

Bob,

Sounds like you made the best of a bad situation.

We won't be back up until the weekend after next. Hoping by then it will have gotten cold and the February blizzards will have moved in and done their thing. So far, there is not a speck on the horizon, unfortunately.

I have yet to decide. I'm going to Cannon on Sat.
Sunday the River or Loon again.
Then i'm missing 2 weeknds in a row. I have not done that in 5 years. Hopefully it will be winter by the time we return.

No. I just view where I go. Stowe is not in my travel plans. Loon has guns going everywhere according to the website. More trails have snow been made on them currently than I have ever seen. http://www.loonmtn.com

Looks like I go back to Loon Sunday. Plus being hopeful that the storm hits us Sunday. I would prefer the easiest way home.
