Loon moves forward with South Peak expansion

wow... I remember on my very first trail map of the ski area, more than a decade ago, these trails were marked as "future trails" (some even already have a name)

Tough to believe that finally, the project will be done !!

Centex Destination Properties... sounds like a minor league Intrawest wannabe to me. Is Loon going to have anything to do with running that or are they just planning to collect some kind of royalties as part of the deal? Will it be another Tremblant-esque "Looney Tunes" theme village? (Ok, their village isnt really themed on Looney Tunes, its sort of playing on the McTrail theme)

Sven

Centex is actually one of the largest homebuilders in the US. They've built neighborhoods in suburbia all across the country.

It's my understanding that they've purchased 47 acres at the base to subdivide into residential lots upon which they'll build homes, and optioned additional acreage for condos and a hotel. Loon is clearly using the revenue from that sale to finish the ski terrain.

Centex is also the company building the long-delayed Killington Village.

I've recently seen their advertisements for resort property in Hawaii in airline magazines.

Centex? Sounds like some sorta' new drug put out by a mega pharmaceutical corporation like Pfizer, Merck, MegaDrug Inc-Gmbh-Ltd; something that would help out with E.D., baldness, sadness, madness.

Is this Looney Tune project gonna' be around where those 2 non lift served trails with a NW exposure overlook I-93?

I've never skied Loon, myself. My impression of that place is such that I don't want to. About 20 years ago, they made a big deal of some new steep Marketing trail that was dubbed as "the most significant new expert trail since Outer Limits at Killington". Nearby Cannon on the other hand is one of my favorites and worth the extra 15 minute drive, or so I believe.

Back to droning ......the SQL finally did it's job.

yes.

loon actually has some decent trails. unfortunately, the mountain is ruined by hordes of people, expensive prices, and a country club climate and culture. last time i was there, i just got the feeling the deck was a runway at a fashion show or something. good place to hit mid-week on a free voucher if you ever have the chance. :D otherwise, cannon is right up the road if you are paying. i was recently blown away by one of loon's glades which i believe is called mike's way. so the place does have decent terrain when the snow is right and the crowds are down.

that new development sounds like a step in a stratton like direction. when will the new england resort housing market finally become saturated to the point that people will either have too many options and prices will go down or all the rich folks that need second and third houses have as many as they need?

Intrawest was a real estate company way before being involved in the ski industry. Started being involved with skiing to be able to showcase their building. The rest is history... :?

my 2 cents are that
the terrain at loon takes a bad rap
the crowd situation reputation is well deserved
they do as well as can be expected for snow quality considering they get about 120 inches a year, have a base elevation of under 1000 ft and have super tight water restrictions for making snow
the crowd situation degrades the marginal snow quality even more
they do a great job trying to offer all types of skiing, flat and fast, bumps, jibbing, pipe, to all types of skiers
the glades are a little underrated like river said
they do a terrible job under pricing the season passes
the lodge space is inadequate, often times even mid week
the food is brutal
april 1 till closing is very uncrowded
the ski patrol  is very arrogant and unfriendly ( except for JANICE ) and not very skilled skiers
:D

I can't comment on what Janice is like, but Joe's review of Loon is very accurate in all respects.

When these new trails were cut ten years ago, Loon used to encourage then look the other way if the trails were poached. There was a shuttle bus that would stop and bring you back to the base areas. Now I understand, skiing this terrain is a big non-no. These trails were fun to ski and are similar to the Mittersill terrain at Cannon.

I am a newbie here, but a loon regular. The access on Rte 112 is a concern of mine getting through the town. I have not seen any info on possible changes of the highway here.
I'm hoping the developement will lead to the additional cutting of trails on the North peak and adding on the extra chairs to the North peak chair.
Ya its busy I work around it fairly well other than Washingtons birthday weekend.
Nice Vertical only can really use it all 1st thing due to the lines.

RivercOil is correct on the country club atmoshphere. I have no problem with that. I go pretty much at least 1 day usually 2 Nov though April. It is great for kids.

As many have pointed out, Loon does have some significant assets. Generally speaking, the negatives outweigh the positives, except of course, for the Range Rover crowd.

Look at it this way, it serves as a road block to keep the non-believers from reaching Cannon :)

I don't have a Range Rover, but the analogy fits a bit to the crowd. Midweek lots of locals with the cheap pass.
Jeans and old skies are common. One advantage is very few people arrive early. I get alot of early runs in.
