WED: AN UNTIMELY COLD SNAP AND ABOUT 2 INCHES OF SNOW DURING THE PREVIOUS 24HRS MADE FOR EPIC SURFACES ON ANYTHING GROOMED. EPIC WEATHER, BLUE BLUE AND ABOUT 50F . THE WEST SIDE QUAD IS SHUT SO IT'S THE GONDY AND THE N PEAK. SADLY, THE PREVIOUS WEATHER MADE LOWER FLUMES BUMPS UNSKIABLE ALL DAY- EVEN THE WARM TEMPS COULDN'T TAKE CARE OF THE HARD FREEZE THAT HAPPENED. THEY DIDN'T EVEN PULL THE ROPE . WE ENDED UP GOING IN ABOUT 3PM FOR 3 RUNS.. AFTER BEING MAD ALL DAY ABOUT THEM NOT EVEN TRYING TO OPEN IT. IN THE END THEY WERE PROBABLY RIGHT AS WE WERE ONLY ABLE TO SKI THE LOWER 25%. NO ONE THERE :? OF COURSE.
THURS: OUR LAST DAY FOR THE HILL IN LINCOLN AS THEY SHUT IT DOWN THIS COMING SUNDAY. EVERYTHING WAS EPIC. THE FLUME WAS SKIABLE BY 11. SURFACES ON BUMPS AND ON FLATS WERE THE SWEETEST CORN ALL YEAR. IT DID NOT GET MUSHY AT ALL ALL DAY. THE LINES ON FLUME WERE CERTAINLY TECHNICAL FOR SURE, BUT ALL IN ALL THE BEST SKI DAY OF SEASON. TEMPS WERE ABOUT 50 BUT A COOL WIND MADE IT FEEL LIKE 40... AGAIN , THE JOINT WAS EMPTY :? THIS SEEMED TO CONTROL THE SNOW SURFACE AND REALLY IT WAS ONE OF THE TOP 5 DAYS I HAVE EVER SKIED WHEN FACTORING ALL THINGS. HOOKED UP WITH SOME OF THE KMART MOGUL POSSE WHO WERE OVER JUST FOR THE CHANGE OF PACE. MY BUDDY G AND I SKIED OVER TO RUMRUNNER AND JUMPED THE ROPE FOR THE LAST RUN OF THE DAY. ONE FINAL RUN OF LOWER RUMRUNNER ( SICK PERFECT VIRGIN CORN BUMPS ) AFTER SITTING ALL ALONE AT THE TOP OF THE RUN SAYING OUR GOODBYES  TILL ABOUT 5PM SUCKING UP THE MOMENT MADE THE WALK BACK TO THE BASE LODGE INSIGNIFICANT.
LOOKS LIKE THE CAT IS PROBABLY EITHER NOT GONNA MAKE IT OR WILL NOT BE WORTH IT , SO IT'S PROBABLY KMART TIME ON TUES AND WED NEXT WEEK.
LOON POSTSCRIPT.: LOON IS GOING OUT WITH PL;ENTY OF SNOW ON THE HILL... LOWER FLUME ( IN THE BUMPS ) IS LOADED. UPPPER FLUME AND W BOSS HAVE AT LEAST 24 INCHES . IF YOU ARE THINKING ABOUT IT ON THE WEEKEND AND LIKE SKIING SOFT BUMPS, GO , THAT'S ALL I CAN SAY, YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT... WE ARE DISAPPOINTED THAT THEY ARE CLOSING AND DO THING THEY SHOULD GO ANOTHER WEEK... BUT HOW MADE CAN YOU GET WHEN 30 CARS SHOW UP IN THE LOT. IT'S BEEN SAID A MILLION TIMES , BUT I STILL JUST CAN'T GET OVER THE FACT THAT PEOPLE WILL NOT SKI NOW.... THURSDAY WAS THE BEST DAY OF THE YEAR, NO JOKE , NO EXAGGERATION... WE LIVE IN A STRANGE WORLD FOR SURE

I think I'll take the powder days, of which last Saturday was one, over the corn moguls. But if you like bumps, the conditions joegm describes are the most enjoyable. Mammoth will be serving those up until July 4 (that's official now).

i would expect nothing less from the left coast, and i totally understand.. but out here, we just don't get powder days on anywhere near the scale you guys do....and when we do, it seems like they are usually followed by some crazy arctic blast of single digit temps and high winds....i know there will be people out here who will say i'm all wet... but that's ok...i understand it's different for everyone, but man , thursday was the kind of day that defines why i ski...it was totally , utterly perfect.... powder is great , but it always seems to come with a trade off out here...i think i've skied only one day in my life where there wasn't any scrapped off areas of snow exposing eastern hardpack. ( three years ago at cannon :P ... an epic 40 incher on the upper mountain )

july 4th huh?... my buddy gil and i swear if we discovered skiing before we graduated from college, we would have gone out west and probably never come back... unbelievable.. life is good in mammoth for sure
