I had two freebies for Loon to burn up and since I find that particular mountain to lack the challenges in skiing I look for so I figured it would be a good place to bring my kid .
We got there around 9:30 and parked next to the Kanc Quad. I could tell it was going to be a busy day.
We suited up in the lodge and hit the quad about 10. My son was worried he wasnt going to remember how to ski but still wanted to ski a "Black Diamond". I laughed and figured perhaps next year. He skied right off the lift and into a parrallel stance and was linking turns right off the bat! I couldnt have been more proud.
Conditions were mostly packed powder, especially in the AM. There were a couple spots in the afternoon that got scratched up but they were easily avoided and not too bad.
There were lots and lots of people! Friday was the first time all season I have had to wait in a liftline. Lines at the Kanc Quad were a 5-10 minute wait and the Gondola was about 10-15. I dont care for that at all.
My son has four days of skiing in his life now. Four days and he hit every single jump they had made under the quad and only fell a couple times. He also tackled the halfpipe with total confidence, doing little hop turns to spin himself around at the top of the pipe! Run after run we kept hitting the terrain park and halpipe and he was in his glory!
It was just incredible to see how much progress he made from one run to the next. So much so that I took him down his first Black Diamond! Rumrunner(which is a joke that it's a Black but he diddn't care) and he was beaming with confidence after that! Every time we got in the liftline he would tell anyone who listened how he just "nailed the halpipe" or "crushed those jumps"! As a matter of fact, he went to sleep last night wearing his ski goggles and is outside right now with them on his head playing wiht his friends! He was getting very upset with me at lunch because I was taking too long .
Loon did in fact have two seeded bump runs that I saw. I never got over to the North area so I dont know if there are any up that way. The bumps were everything a developing bumper could want except they are only about 75-100 yards long and the troughs are scraped to solid ice.
So although I'm not a fan of Loon I had a great time skiing there with my son and he kept me entertained all day!
