Lost Trail Powder Mountain, MT 11/06/04

Last weekend was pretty wet, and we even accumulated some snow down in town (~3,600?). The moisture stayed around for a couple more days, and the Lost Trail SNOTEL on Saddle Mountain (7,900?) reported snow depth at almost a foot. I figured it wouldn?t be quite enough to do much real skiing, but it would probably suffice to get Ty out for some sliding on his skis. With warm sunny temperatures predicted for the next few days, I wasn?t sure how long the snow was going to hang around, so we decided to get up to the pass on Saturday morning. We found that snow depth at the base (7,000?) was about 6 inches, and it was sort of that sugary hoar snow (the kind that you probably don?t want below the surface in avalanche terrain). However, in this case it made for nice fluffy snow for Ty to play around in.

The normal bunny slope that we use still had some grass and small trees poking through it, so we hung back toward the lodge and used the slope that dropped to the ticket window area. Ski area vehicle traffic had packed the snow down to a useful sliding surface, so we used it for a few runs with Ty. He probably got in some of his fastest sliding ever between my legs, and he learned to say ?Woooo!? as he went down the hill. We saw a couple of snowmobiles taking advantage of the snow, and a few other vehicles that seemed to be taking care of maintenance issues, but that was about it. After we were done skiing, Ty spent some time gettnig used to running around in the snow. His favorite part seemed to be tracking up areas of untouched snow, which is probably a good sign. He was NOT keen on falling in the snow with his mittens off, but he gradually got acclimated enough to throw some snowballs with bare hands. Temps were in the 30s up at the pass, but in the low 60s by the time we got home. The forecast looks pretty dry for the near future, so we may be talking about similar conditions if we head up again next weekend.
