Well, I expected this Saturday to be twice as better at MRG than last weekend ? on a scale of 1-to-10, I anticipated a 3 rather than a 1.5 ! I got Quacky for trail check and it was not that bad. Nice skier packed powder on top and glare ice underneath. That meant for every 4 or 5 turns of glee, there was a turn of terror. There was no scraping sound, just a wooooosh! Chipmunk and Gazelle were actually great ? chowder, skier packed and an occasional tuft of untracked. A pleasant surprise, indeed.
At 10:00, the Flight Commander wanted some volunteers to ski down the closed Fall Line. He does not believe in boot-packing, but rather he feels that a little bit of actual skiing with some overnight setting up, prepares the trail much better. Some lemmings from a Cult joined us. Skiing was awful, but I did sign up to be a Patroller, ya? know. We repeated this procedure on the closed Gazelle/Slalom Hill/Panther. There was still that frightening crust underneath, but there was also some great turns to be had in the untracked. Good adventure was to be had ?..but is was still not suitable for the public.
In the afternoon, I joined up with the Plaid contingency and I showed them the treats I had found on Chipmunk/Gazelle and Snail/P-Bowl. This was after I negotiated the groomed Cat Bowl. This had rather interesting skiing which included a line that had to be skied just right in order to avoid some terrifying glare ice ? it gave me a flashback to a James Bond Traverse we had to make across some snow bridges at Fairy Meadow to a line on a glacier.
Snow fell at a brisk pace in the afternoon and I found great new fluff on nicely groomed terrain in the Cool Green World of Birdland 8) on my B-Land Stint.
For Sweep, Bart asked for some volunteers to make another pass with him down the closed Gazelle/Slalom Hill/Panther. Hmmmm ?..the allure of adventure surged through my veins and I along with Jim swallowed the bait. Skiing there was slightly better than in the morning and no less adventurous ? we loved it. I continued my sweep assignment down Periwinkle/P-Bowl which was heaven with the new snow.
A pretty cool day!
