Mad River Glen, Vermont 12/18-19

The drive up was pleasant compared to the prior Friday?s and the weeks commutes into The Bowels of Route 128 (that?s the notorious highway with lotsa? cahs driven by real live Massholes ?.like me).

Crowds on the weekend were light and snow was great everywhere on-piste. I didn?t try off-piste as I think a little more is needed. On Saturday morning, I headed up The Single for Trail Check and got some plums ? Cat Bowl, Upper/Lower Glade. So good was skiing off of the summit, that I went to Fall Line for a 2nd run. Actually, it was all good no matter where I went. The Blue Heaven of P-Bowl was especially nice as was Upper Canyon. Unfortunately, the Birdland lift was not running, but fortunately, many of the trails of the Brave Green World of Birdland were accessible.

In the afternoon, we did some sled practice. For Gawd only knows what reason, the decision was made to go down Lynx. At the top of this, I on the handles and to my surprise, it was the toughest sled run I ever had. Man, that trail is brutal when you?re running a sled ? very steep drop-offs, deep troughs and stumps. I caught some hidden brush and stumps with my skis which made me a bit gun-shy after a while. But I did get some nice compliments on my run. I ran the tail down Beaver which seemed easy in comparison. I also got some compliments on my improved skiing to which I credited to some new stretching exercises that I have added to my workout regimen.

Sweep run was down what is usually my favorite check run ? Panther. I started off by skiing aggressively, but then reminded myself to be more deliberate and carefully check the surrounding woods and sides of trails in order to find any misfortunate adventurers that might be in peril.

For Sunday, I did an enjoyable check on Fall Line. Light snow fell on and off during the day. For a stint, I opted to sign up for the Stark?s Nest rather than the usual top of the Double for a change of pace ?.so when it came time, I loaded on the Double and did not realize my mistake until I was near the Birdcage ? uh, oh. So I announced this on the radio to which I was razzed and the Assistant PD lamented that he was happy as he knows that I have good taste in ?penance?.

For sweep, I was assigned Antelope and if you do Upper for check/sweep, ya? gotta? do Lower. This meant I had a wonderful very solitary final run. At the end of the day, we got a knock on the Patrol Shack door and for the second week in a row, I assisted in pushing someone outta? the snow ? that?s Vermont, ya? know.
