MRG absolutely kicks my arse each time I visit. Today was no exception.

Buddy Ben kicked my arse, too. He was the tour guide du jour, linking one off-piste section with another. FTO contributors Dan Barron and Michael Bernstein were also along for Mr. Toad's Wild Ride, as were a couple of Mike's friends. An adrenaline-charged rat pack.

Ben standing atop a drop in the trees:

We started off on Donkey. "This is called Donkey?" I asked.

"Yep," Ben verified. "It's called Donkey because halfway down, you feel like an ass."

What a warm-up!

The rest of it was a blur. Trees whizzing by in a blur. A couple of those woods lines were, ahem, "technical." "Technical" as in "What the hell am I supposed to do now?"

I told Ben that I needed to rechannel my nerves into some positive energy. "Visualize yourself skiing your chosen line," Ben advised. OK, plant my pole there, turn right around that tree, make another left before that tree, then ride it out in that space filled with nothing but saplings to burn off the speed. OK, check, got it. Push off...plant, turn, turn, ...yeah!!

Toward the end of the day, Ben turned to me. "You know," he said, "ski more often with me and your wife will either love me or hate me. Love me for getting you out of her hair, or hate me for getting you killed."

Ben's other line of the day, uttered while deciding where to go: "So, how adventurous do you feel?"

Anything groomed flat today was fast and hard, and anything bumped was chalky and pleasant, but firm. Some bump lines had little nasties lurking in some of the troughs. We actually found some fresh lines off the map, but if I told you where they were I'd have to kill you.

Fast groomed on Liftline:

Chalky bumps beneath the single on Chute:

The winner in the cold category this morning was Fort Ann, New York, where it was -19F as I passed through the village at 7:30 a.m. It was about -4F when I pulled into the parking lot at 9 a.m. sharp, and the first few rides up the single chair were, uh...a wee bit nippy with a breeze in the face. The day progressed to bordering on comfortable in the afternoon.

The best part of the weather, though, were the skies today. Not a cloud in 'em. Views across the Lake Champlain valley to the Adirondacks beyond were stunning, and in the other direction New Hampshire's Presidential Range was clearly visible.

Looking across the Champlain Valley at the Adirondack High Peaks:

Views north toward Camel's Hump:

I've got a bit of a fat nose tonight from a battle with a very unforgiving sapling. For the record, the sapling won. OK, somebody grab me the bottle of Vitamin I!!

Marc !

Thanks a lot for this wonderful report !

I really have to ski back this mountain !

There wasn't enough snow to enjoy the off-pistes when I went, so even though I skied most of the black trails, I missed most of the challenging terrain of the mountain I guess !

Yes, you did miss it. At MRG, the marked trails are best used only as a means to get to the good stuff.

LOL

it says all !

Some trails are already totally amazing

I guess the area between Beaver and Lower Antelope should be full of B/C places, but I'm better to not ask more, cause I could be killed ;)

Marc - everytime I see a ski patroller at MRG I want to ask are YOU Marc Guido??

I have to agree that the trails only lead to the good stuff at MRG. We're just back from another of our monthly trips up and had a blast playing in the woods.

I wanna come play with you though!

I got to explore the area where Frankontour is talking about this last week-end, but I know there are LOTS of other places I've yet to find.

Sunday was an awesome day as the cold kept most people home and there were NO LINES all day. After a day at Jay Peak on Friday, and two days at MRG there was no WAY I could even think about skiing on Monday. My legs were jello!

Hmmm...Maggie, perhaps you have me confused with Mark Renson? Mark has done some writing for us on occasion and has patrolled at MRG for some time now. I've worn a patrol jacket myself in years past, but for 8 years at Jay Peak, never at MRG. I left the Jay patrol back in 1996 when I moved out of the Northeast, and even though I'm now back in the region the magazine is keeping me way, way too busy to even contemplate returning to their ranks. It's a pity, too, for those were the best 8 years of my life on skis. Anyone who's considering giving something back to the sport by patrolling should not miss an opportunity to give it a shot.

FYI, our sponsor "Snow Shack" is run by George Hall, another MRG patroller and his partner.

That said, if you ever spot a black helmet sporting our No-Bull logo sticker on the back, then tap me on the shoulder and say "hello." The more the merrier in our posse. Company for good times and good turns is always welcome. You'll never see me posting online directions to stashes, but I'm more than happy to share them in-person, and the friends that I routinely ski with are of a like mind in that regard.

BTW, speaking of Jay, I'd love to have you post something regarding their current conditions. I'm heading back to my old stomping grounds on Sunday after a press visit to Mont Sutton on Saturday, and I'm anxious to get some first-hand news of how things are looking. Thanks in advance!

(And yeah...I'm feeling that jello thing, too. After each day this weekend -- Saturday at Middlebury, Sunday at Bear Creek, and Monday at MRG -- I foolishly made the drive back to Albany rather than stay up in the mountains like I should have. Thank God for the office, as I need these work weeks to recover from these weekends. The stairs sure feel long today!)

Marc Guido/Marc Renson - you guys all look the same when your dressed to ski ~wink

I was a Jay Peak Virgin until Friday the 13th. Been on my list for the last few years, but it's always easier for me to roll out of bed, throw on my stuff and ski down to the basebox then get in a car.

A good friend and Jay Peak lover was my tour guide on the 13th. It snowed all day, and I have no idea where I was most of the time as I just followed him into glade after glade of gorgeous bumps full of enough snow for everyone. I'm trying to get back there on the 27th ~grin

I'll watch for the No Bull sticker at MRG - I'm on Channel 7-11 when we're there, and I answer to #1 - or EB.

Be well! Ski hard!

That way, no one else will feel inclined to do it.)

I see SNOW in the forecast up there for Saturday and Sunday. woohoo!
