Early in the A.M. on Saturday, I left the present Snow Capital of The East (eastern Massachusetts ? I swear that Hudson has the most snow) for the anemic sickly snowpack of the supposed Holy Land.
Due to some scheduling, Jon a pro patroller was made the Flight Commander for the weekend for his very first time. You?ve met him before through my posts and he was the one who brought Duphphy down Paradise in a sled (Matt, he was asking about you not too long ago). One of our objectives for the day was to look out for the possibility of opening Gazelle/Panther/Slalom Hill which were closed due to excessively slick conditions. There was that possibility of those slopes corning up a bit.
So, at the top of The Double on the whiteboard, I meticulously drew in an ear of corn on a stalk with the comment of ?Hoo Knowz, ya? just might find some corn?.
The snowpack is just hanging on by a -----t?h?r?e?a?d----- on Stark Mountain.
An uneventful morning started with the groomers skiing very well and some softening spots found on the skiers left of Cat Bowl and Canyon. On the latter, I ran into a smiling petunia on telemark gear and she asked me about the skiing off of The Double. Hmmmm that got me thinking ?.maybe I should be a real hero and check to see if the strong sun was softening those closed trails off of The Double, thus making them openable ? after all, that was a directive from the Flight Commander!
At the top of The Double, I tapped fellow patroller Tom on the shoulder and suggested that perhaps we should at least check out the closed terrain to which he happily agreed to. Whaddya? know, it was corning up and we had some outstanding turns down Panther/Gazelle/Slalom Hill ? now that?s why we really patrol! At the bottom, we ran into Jon and held a meeting of the minds and got the authority to drop ropes IF we set up some proper signage and ?boo. A bit of an enthusiastic scramble ensured in caches to put together some Caution/Thin Cover/Experts Only signage and shortly afterwards we had a nice Corn Harvest assembled!
My day was better than I had anticipated, especially in light of the low snow. I had some nice turns during my Birdland stint while a tricky incident was being handled with our rookie leader calmly directing from the Starks nest and Christian our Certified Patroller providing some critical input on the scene.
At the end of this nice day, we cracked open a few beers I had brought in to ensure we had as good a day as possible for our rookie leader. Went back to the club, showered and ugh ? did some white collar drone work on my laptop ?til near midnight ??.there better be some good gear stocked on the shelves when the next paycheck rolls in.
