From mid-January to mid-March, it was too cold to snow ..... now it's too warm and it's
all startin' to show. In fact, The Vertical Challenge got postponed due to deteroriating
condtions on Liftline. After at least 4 days this season where it was minus 20F when we
jumped on the lifts in the morning and skiing since November, these spring conditions
seem so foreign.
But all trails were opened and it was my job to check Chute. The snow here was rotten
and I was very cautious on my descent. But there was plenty of snow on the upper mountain and no bare spots at all except for that super fun corkscrew on Upper Antelope.
Heavy, but manageble snow was found on The Double with great coverage on Panther and
oustanding bumps on the Quacky headwall. I took care of booing a small water bar on Lower Glade, but found great coverage on that one too.
Snow was heavy and took a lotta' energy to turn in, but it was actually fun at the same
time. Light rain fell, but I didn't mind. I did some AED practice.
On Sunday, whaadya' know, we got 2" of new snow. This coating was key as the upper
mountain was getting just a bit firm underneath. Light snow fell throughout the morning. This was all good news as this made for some very good skiing for the day. Upper Panther was great on trail check as I was able to make some tracks. Outstanding bumps were found on Quacky Headwall, Catamount Bowl and upper Upper Glade. The brave green World of Birdland had much untracked wet snow over wet granular. Unfortunately, the
Birdland lift is closed for the season :-( . One of our responsibilities as a volunteer
patroller is to spend at least a half hour on a wekeend day skiing off of The Birdland lift. This is enjoyable as it gives one a chance to kick back and make some nice mellow turns and work on technique on some great novice terrain.
I gave a taxi ride to someone from the top of The Double down to the bottom. On sweep,
I still found some untracked on Robin.
Good skiing ..... but it's dying fast. The usual big March dump(s) never showed up this
year, so ski it while you can.
